Which natural disaster do you prefer? An earthquake? A hurricane? A tornado?
I have a theory that people in California fear tornadoes. People in the midwest either fear hurricanes or earthquakes. We fear the natural disasters that other parts of the country face.
Patsy Ittner's post about fearing Alligators VS. Tornadoes caught my attention...
There are lots of other natural disasters I never even considered in August 2006 (this is a rerun, the 2007 new and improved version), floods, fires (wildfires the kind they have in California), snow storms, hail, ice....
In Ohio we have tornadoes, floods, snow storms, hail, ice, severe storms. We have had earthquakes in Ohio, in my lifetime they've been itty bitty earthquakes. I am afraid of tornadoes but they are so random.
I have worked with clients who seem unnaturally fearful of tornadoes. From watching the Wizard of Oz as a kid? Fear of flying monkeys is my unnatural fear from that movie.

I asked this question on ActiveRain over a year ago in a "Members Only" post. What can I say, I was shy when I first joined ActiveRain.... I did lots of "Members Only" posts. Very interesting data. I think you are on to something, I fear most the disaster I have not experienced.
I think I would prefer a tornado....hurricanes have to much flooding and earthquakes cause a lot of destruction. I think with a tornado if you have a basement you can probably be ok.

Not sure Jennifer about fearing what you have not experienced. I can say, living in FL since 1984, I have seen quite a few Hurricanes come through the area, including Andrew. Because of that I thought I knew. Then came Hurricane Charlie, in the busy '04 hurricane season. Although Charlie was one of the most powerful, it did not have the normal storm surge flooding and was fast moving & small, the Southwest Florida area did not see the massive destruction of Katrina or Andrew. But where the damage was, it was severe, and I can say this, I now can say I REALLY know what it is like to live through a hurricane. If another one ever comes, I do now fear them actually more than when I thought I knew what they were like. I will have much more respect for it, as I do not want to live through another such event.

Anyone who has lived through a tornado, or a bad hurricane has a right to fear them. Or any disaster... I have never been through any major natural disaster.
There is an article in this months National Geographic about Naples Italy... 9 miles from Vesuvius.... Pompei was destroyed by Vesuvias in 79 AD. I did not read the article but someone told me all about it, piece by piece, showed me the photos. Volcanos are really scary!
I don't like severe thunderstorms that contain high winds and lightening. Lightening hit my home a few years ago and it scared the crap out of me. No damage to the house other than blackened shingles but several appliances were destroyed.
Regarding tornadoes, when the big tornado hit Zenia back in the 70's, we lived in Marysville. We had mail and other debris in OUR yard from that storm. When my ex was a boy living in the flat land of NW Ohio, a tornado hit their home. They were saved only flipping over their sofa and crawling under it. The house ended up a bunch of sticks. But an old corn crib with many slats missing was untouched.
I remember the two mini earthquakes we had here.

Elaine I remember two mini earthquakes, not feeling them but hearing about them. When I moved to Dayton where there are no basements I was nervous about tornadoes.

You are right tsunamis are truly frightening. I did not even think of tsunamis. The big tsunami was December 26, 2004? Thanks for being impressed.

Maureen, this is interesting content for a post. like it. it's fire up here. before we got enough sense to get out of LA, it was earthquakes. It we were in Florida, it would have been hurricane. If New Orleans, it would have been the Bush administration, and anyone in Louisiana government from the senate down.
Guess our take on disasters is pretty self oriented. Where are we at greatest risk... I just had to scroll up to that map again, it's really superb.

-Nothing, God is in Control
-Tsunamis (after that horrific one when 300,000 people died. )
-Severe thunderstorms & lightening
-any natural disaster
How fun is that? A cool poll...I love it! As a Floridian having weathered Hurricane Elena and then the summer of FOUR, one would think I would fear hurricanes more, but I'll tell you I was much more spooked in California by the Joshua Tree trembles I felt years ago.
Hi, I think this was a marvelous post and so well illustrated. I voted and of course being from California, I voted Earthquake. My nephew lost everything in the Northridge Quake. Family survived, thankfully.

William and Brad: my supposition was that people in CA are not afraid of earthquakes. I want to say when we chatted about natural disastsers in 2006 in my members only post Gena R. said she is more afraid of tornadoes (or maybe I need to reread it again.) I don't know if Gena shared it in a commnet in that entry or whether it was in a meme post but if I remember correctly she was hurt in an earthquake. Fell down in the shower. Scary to me.
