Its Official Fall is Here

At 5:41am this morning it officially became Fall. In the language of science, an equinox is either of two points on the celestial sphere where the ecliptic and the celestial equator intersect. For the rest of us, it's one of two times a year when the sun crosses the equator. Once going north in the Spring and once going South in the Fall. At this point the day and night are of approximately of equal length.

With Fall comes many changes and easily my favorite time of the year. When you look around the countryside you can see folks preparing for winter. The corn and soybeen harvest has begun. Over the past week I've noticed at least 5 or 6 people cutting firewood for the winter. I myself have spent the past two weeks cutting firewood for the winter. Most gardens have been harvested with some tomatoes, squash and watermelon still producing. Gourds and pumpkins are yet to be harvested and will likely be ready starting this week.

I've noticed that the colors are appearing a little early this year. Last year the tree colors were "camera ready" on October 1st. With a cold spell and nearly freezing temps early in September I suspect the tree colors to be ready for cameras around September 26th this year. The Loess Hills are covered with many different hardwoods species that always give a great display in the fall. The many bur oaks and hickory trees always produce great views in the Fall.

Living on an acreages in the rough western edge of the Loess Hills I get the benefit of having a lot of timber in the area. The western edge of the Loess Hills are the roughest terrain with teh steepest slopes where the heaviest particles of Loess were deposited. Those steep slopes have never been tilled or cleared. Those slopes hold the most mature timber stands in the area.

With Fall always comes the trips to Smalls Fruit Farm. Even though they are open year round Fall is a popular time to visit Smalls to purchase the many different types of produce right here in the Loess Hills. Smalls grow everything from apples to pumpkins. They even produce the best cherry, raspberry and apple cider you can find. Lets not forget Joyce's kitchen where you can find the best apple pie you've ever had. If you are looking for something to do this Fall stop by Smalls to get your pumpkins and then sit and relax at Joyc'es kitchen for a slice of apple pie and ice cream. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
