Portsmouth NH Schools - Reading, Writing, Math, and More

Portsmouth New Hampshire Schools

Portsmouth NH School Department Logo "The purpose of the Portsmouth schools is to educate all students by challenging them to become thinking, responsible, contributing citizens who continue to learn throughout their lives."

This is the motto of the Portsmouth NH Schools Department, and they really do live and breathe their motto. Our Superintendent of Schools here in Portsmouth is Robert (Bob) Lister, and he is probably one of the most accessible and caring people you could ever want to talk to if you're interested in learning about our schools. I have clients moving here shortly, and they wanted to know all they could about our schools. I gave them his name and contact info, and they were so pleased with being able to speak directly to him, and with all the information he not only shared over the phone with them, but also the information he took the time to email and mail to them.

Portsmouth is served by three elementary schools, all of which are very good schools. Which school kids go to is determined by geographic locations within the town. To see which areas of town are served by which elementary schools, you can check out the Portsmouth Elementary School District Map.

Dondero Elementary School Dondero Elementary School 2
This is the Mary C. Dondero Elementary School, known to locals as Dondero Elementary School. Named after a former mayor of Portsmouth, this school serves Kindergarten through 5th grade, with a current enrollment of 375 students. Jill LeMay is the principal of Dondero.

Little Harbor Elementary School Little Harbor Elementary Side View
Little Harbor Elementary School sits right on the edge of one of the back channels of Portsmouth Harbor, hence the name. This school serves Kindergarten through grade 5, and has a current enrollment of 370 students. Robin Burdick is the principal.

New Franklin Elementary New Franklin School 2
New Franklin Elementary School also serves Kindergarten through 5th grade, and their current enrollment is 287 students. The principal of New Franklin is George Shea.

Portsmouth Middle School

Portsmouth Middle School has a current enrollment of students in 6th through 8th grade of 558 students. Right next door to the Middle School is our brand new library. It hasn't opened up yet, but when it does, it will be a beauty, and so convenient for the kids to get to.

This school was built in 1930, originally as the Portsmouth Junior High School. John Stokel is the principal, and he has been there since 1974, when he began as a teacher.

Portsmouth High School Portsmouth High School 2

Portsmouth NH High School SignPortsmouth High School currently has approximately 1,100 students in grades 9 - 12. Principal Jeffrey Collins and a school faculty of 112 work hard to ensure the best high school experience any student could have.

PHS has recently completed a huge multi-million renovation, and it is just beautiful now! My sisters went to this school and they won't even recognize it when they see it! It's gorgeous and offers so much more now than it ever did. There's a wide variety of clubs, sports, and extra-curricular activities for all interests, and the classroom curriculum offers 192 courses in 18 different departments.

The State of New Hampshire's website offers an abundance of educational information on all schools and colleges within the state. If you'd like additional information on Portsmouth's schools, be sure to check that site out.

Portsmouth NH residents take an active role in making sure all of our schools are top notch, and offer programs that meet the needs of all students citywide, not just in school work, but in the extra-curricular activities and in the physical buildings themselves.

This is a great town to live in, and our schools are just one of the many reasons that make Portsmouth such a desireable town to live in. Being right here on the coast of New Hampshire, with the Atlantic Ocean right here at our doorstep, the mountains for skiing and great scenery just an hour away, as well as Boston, Manchester, and Portland all within an hour's drive - what more could a person want???!?!?!?!?

Monika - thanks for your comment.  I thought it would be helpful to have all that school info on 1 place.

Ann - those pictures really take me back.  I graduated from PHS June 11, 1976.  The school was so crowded that we were on split shifts.  As a junior and senior my school hours were something like 7:30 to noon - hard to remember after all the years.  Is the huge anchor out in front of PHS?

Hi Sam - thanks for reading!  Yep, that huge anchor is still out there in front.  You should see the high school now!  They underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion, and it is just beautiful now.  I took a tour of it several months ago, and it's really nice now.  And they've also got some room to expand, too.

You probably remember the old library, too.  Did you see my post on the brand new gorgeous library we now have?  It's brand new, just officially opened last week, although they did a soft opening before Christmas.  Here's another post that might be fun to read on Portsmouth!

Thanks again for stopping by!!
Ann
