HOA ApathyI read Robin Williams blog on HOA's and the size and color of signs and, as always, it set me off on my HOA rants. She talks about HOA's and the new law is Arizona concerning size and color of signs and a "gray" area about what an HOA might or probably will use to restrict signs. HOA boards that are "out of control" or are restrictive or whatever else you want to call them are that way BECAUSE OF YOU, THE RESIDENTSin the association. Apathy abounds and if you don't get involved you deserve what you get. Everyone is busy, everyone doesn't have huge amounts of time, however, unless you live in a retirement community and/or retired, most people on boards have jobs and VOLUNTEER their time. Do you know what your CCR's are? Have you read them? As a Realtor, do you know what the CCR's are in a given community that you list or purchase from? As a resident, when was the last time you went to a board meeting? Do you know who is on your board? Do you know why decisions are made and are you helping in the process? If not why? List your hundreds of excuses here and continue to complain, see how far it gets you. The is one HOA community in Surprise, Arizona where three people wanted an Architectural change for their property and it was not approved. They got involved and ran for the board and won and changed the CCR's to allow the change.
