Montgomery County's Waste Program encourages residents to donate used bikes, parts and accessories to Bikes For the World, a program of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Bikes for the World works with the community to colect and donate thousands of bikes annually. Donated bikes go to developing countries and to the survivors of natural disasters to help them rebuild their lives. For more information you can log onto www.bikesfortheworld.org.

That would be a great idea in many communities. My own in particular, with aging bicycles wasting away in garages. I checked out the link and will find out more about the program and how to replicate or expand it to my area.
What a great idea. Portland had an idea not quit that good, they were taking old bikes painting them yellow and leaving them around downtown for people to use during the day. What ended up happening was the homeless were stealing them scraping the paint and selling the for scrap!
Wow that did not work out well, but was a great idea!
