Let's Play Nice In The Sandbox

Today I taught or maybe I should say presented a workshop called REALTOR® Professional Guidelines. This is a 3 hour continuing education credit course that I developed which is based on NAR's Pathway to Professionalism. I refer to it as my "Let's Play Nice in the Sandbox" class!!! New Hampshire requires 9 hours of ce (continuing education) to renew your real estate license. So I know my attendees are not there because they want to listen to me speak but simply because they want the credit for their license re-newel and I'm the necessary evil standing between them and that goal. No matter....when I present I am "up" on stage trying to entertain and hopefully educate them at the same time.

Usually in the beginning of the class the students have a little bit of an attitude...you know they don't really want to be there....want it over before it begins type of attitude.

I can't tell you how bad it feels to look at those faces...so bored and cold looking...sometimes I think people don't realize the impact their body language has on others...but I digress.

I usually start my class with an ice breaker exercise....just to get the juices flowing and set the tone for the class.

I ask my students to list up to 5 things that irritate them about working with fellow REALTORS® be it in a co-broking situation or in general.

The only rule is no talking about commission, commission splits or slamming different business models. After about 5 minutes I start to re group them and have them present town hall style, their lists of pet peeves. Usually you can see immediately a huge turnaround in their attitude as we discuss their issues and suggest and brain storm solutions. Today was no exception, my class really got into it and soon 45 minutes went by just like that.

Next I went through part of my power point...stats from NAR on what Buyers and Sellers want from Agents and then into my section on Reasonable Care...a short break and then real life Behavior Scenarios...we're having a run on REALTOR® cams, think on the lines of Nanny cams and finally a customized version of NAR's Pathway to Professionalism. I've customized it to my market area so it's not as long as the original and much more pertinent.

This time I threw in a short piece on consumer versus agent centric thanks to Kristal Kraft and her wonderful blog on REALTOR®...It's NOT about you! It was a success!!! Noon time arrived and I had an engaged group of REALTORS® who couldn't believe class was over already...LOL...how sweet is that? They walked out smiling and so did I!

BTW...does anyone have a good graphic showing adults in a sandbox...throwing sand or playing nice???

I think what's great Moni (friends call her Moni) is that you were able to incorporate Kris Krafts blog in your presentation. It just proves that Active Rain does make an impact.

It just proves that we are always learning no mater how long we have been in the business. Thank you Active Rain and everyone here that have touched us in someway.

'The Lovely Monika'

ShaZaam! You got their attention. You have a great way of getting folks to pay attention to you. :)

Any time you give someone the chance to 'vent' you can get their attention.

Humans love to talk about each other and themselves. I would know. LOL...

Humour works pretty well too.

Humans love to laugh and smile as much as they love to talk about others and themselves. I would know. LOL...

TLW "The Lovely Wife"...ShaZaam! Class Would You Like To Talk About You?...ROAR!

Moni who is that pretty lady in the photo, I love it : -)  Can you come and teach a class for us too? I say A for the post too! I love the topic of 'Reasonable Care' and I can just bet you and your Power Point class did that justice.

TLW...Thanks for the ShaZaam!!!! I try to add lots of humor in my classes...keeps them with me and makes it fun for me as well.  I hate long boring classes!!

Linda...Thank you so much for the A+.  That Ice Breaker always gets them going..once they're warmed up things just really move along. Thank you for reading.

You're Welcome! :)

Kristal...Thank you so much.  Adding a small section on consumer/agent centric was perfect, especially in this changing market...thank you so much for writing that blog.

Carole ...You are too cute!!!  Thats me in the photo LOL.  I have an awesome Reasonable Care class...that is the one fiduciary obligation that covers just about everything.  I was working on writing a..you won't believe it...a recipe but then decided to blog about my class because I was just soooo happy with it.

Monika - nice post, and I bet that class was fun, even if it was for CE credits!  I'd take it!  I've never taken one of your classes, but I've certainly heard good things!

Sounds like a fun class, but you are right.  It would be better with adult graphics.

Thanks Ann. It was fun and the 3 hours just flew by.

Rich...I can't find a graphic showing adults and I don't draw well at all. Thanks for your kind words.

I want a teacher just like you!! <whining>  why don't you come teach in Miami Monika? <more whining>

I've never had fun in those clases <pouting>

Moni

Monika- This was more helpful than you know. I do a lot of training. Luckily, none of what I do is "mandatory" - so, I usually have great response, but these are great tactics, and I cant wait to use it! Thanks!

Thanks Mariana. Do you have required continuing education for license renewal in your state?  We have 9 hours every two years...most of what I teach offers CE hours.
