Winter Time in Northern California and Southern Oregon is Beautiful

Yesterday was a beautiful January day. We took advantage of a window in the snow to put in a day of skiing at Mount Shasta Ski Resort. We couldn't have asked for better conditions, both on the roads to and from the resort and on the slopes. With a straight route from Interstate 5 up Highway 89 then to the resort, even our Honda Civic Hybrid made the journey without challenge.

Mount Shasta offers a "Guaranteed to Ski" program for first time skiers/boarders that our youngest took advantage of. There is a 90 minute lesson in the morning where the basics are covered, then off to the tow rope lift to practice the new information on the bunny slope. Having mastered the first steps, it was dismissal time to show mom newfound skills before heading off for lunch and a much earned lunch break.

With some sustenance and rest, back out we go to practice new skills before heading over to the next lesson, another 90 minutes. After a bit more practice, the group head off to master the riding of - and disembarking from - the chairlift. Mount Shasta Ski Resort has several great beginning trails and all the program attendees ended their day having traversed down their first 1.25 mile run.

While our youngest was in lessons, I was able to enjoy the more advanced options Mount Shasta Ski Resort has to offer. For a true Intermediate level skier, options are pretty limited, but no complaints here. All in all, we had a wonderful day, and cannot wait to be able to go again and ski together.

Ski you out there!

Karen, Better you than me. I have a general rule I live by: never go anywhere that turns white while it is white, maybe driving through in the summer is OK.

I'm glad California could provide some fun for you Oregonians (I realize you're transplanted Californians).

Mt Shasta is beautiful, but I've only seen it in summer.

Very good information.  I almost want to go skiing again.

Bill- It took a little acclimating to get this Southern California blood thickened to enjoy the colder temps here in Southern Oregon and Northern California. But, only a little, since although we get four very distinct seasons here, they are mild ones. We usually get just enough snow in Ashland and Medford to appreciate the beauty without ever having to break out the snow shovel. I agree, Mount Shasta is beautiful - in all her seasons. Thanks for stopping by.

Krista - Almost, eh? I took a 12 year hiatus from skiing to get my back up to snuff again, than dove back in to it for the first time on Mount Ashland in 2005. It was wonderful! I'm so glad to be able to pick up a sport I've missed so much. If you ever decide to give it another go, let me know!

Karen,

Looks beautiful. I'm out here in New England and we also have a bunch of snow. I'm looking forward to my first ski of the year! Soon... very soon!

Martin - I've skied many Western Slopes, mostly Oregon (Mount Hood, Mount Bachelor and Mount Ashland) and California (Mount Shasta, Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, Wrightwood and Big Bear) with a couple of jaunts to Colorado and Utah, but have yet to make it to your neck of the woods. Let me know how your first ski day goes, okay? Thanks for stopping by.

That peach colored sky is beautiful! I think that's my favorite part of reading posts from other parts of the country... the unique photos showing the different types of beauty in all God's handiwork =)

Lisa - I love to see photos of that glorious work, too. That is, if I can't get there to see it with my own eyes :->

Woo hoo...a Gold Star!  Thank you!
