Happy Birthday!
Today marks 65 years since The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia was dedicated on January 15, 1943. For 65 years, The Pentagon has remained the largest office in the world. Over 23,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support persons work in this massive five-sided building just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C.
Take a look at the image below to get an idea of the size of this 6.6 million square feet office building.
U.S. Military personnel from all around the world often get the chance to relocate to work in the Pentagon. All branches of the military have offices in this headquarters for the Department of Defense.
Pentagon employees choose to live throughout the metro-D.C. area. There's even a sophisticated system of cooperative transportation to and from the Pentagon called slugging (with its own etiquette, rules, and official or unofficial commuter stops).
An entire infrastructure of residential neighborhoods, restaurants, and shopping have developed around the Pentagon area. Across Army-Navy Drive from the Pentagon sits one of the area's largest shopping malls, The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, anchored by Macy's and Nordstroms. More recently, Pentagon Row was developed adjacent to The Fashion Centre and includes many outdoor eateries, a gym, spa, and a Harris Teeter grocery store.
Many options exist for housing when you are part of a military relocation to The Pentagon. Bus routes, and the Metro subway lines all lead to The Pentagon, and there are also many carpooling options, making living further out from Arlington a possibility for Pentagon employees. Arlington, Virginia itself is quite a hot market still for real estate sales (Read All About It: Arlington Virginia Housing Market a Hot Spot for Sales).

Nicely done! See you around Ring 5!
Great info! I had no idea that the pentagon was that big! I love all of the localism posts to find out more about different areas!
CINDY: Thanks for your comment and compliment on the post.
NAOMA: Thanks for your comment. The Pentagon is massive. I took a private tour there years ago and it's amazing how big the place really is -- people who work there need maps just to navigate!
Brian That is a great picture of the Pentagon - I assume you weren't piloting the plane that took the picture unless it was before 9/11. It is an excellent, informative post, Karen Kruschka
Wow...that's huge! Great presentation to the person relocating to the pentagon!
KAREN: Thanks for your comment and compliment.
SALLY: Yes, the size of the Pentagon is overwhelming. You should see the expanse of the many parking lots!
The good thing is that it has a metro stop. Traffic kills getting to Pentagon parking.
SCOTT: Yes, and a very busy metro stop at that. When I used to work at an office in D.C., I would take the bus to the Pentagon and get on the metro there every day.
We just left DC and our good friend works at the Pentagon. It is an amazing place to work.
Our friend slugs all the way from Fredericksburg! I just read through the history of slugging, IMO, it is just fascinating!
Good story and I am sure you will love this.... I saw this post on my Google Alerts before I saw it from A/R! Google likes you.
KRISTEN: I've only slugged myself once years ago. The bus was running late and a driver pulled up and said "Who's going to downtown D.C.?" -- we made it there quickly in the HOV lane.
JAMES: Thanks. I like Google! I saw it in my Google Alerts too.
Great post Brian... I will keep you in mind in the DC area. Please keep me in mind for Ft Campbell, Kentucky area referrals. I'm licensed both in TN & KY. I'm also a US Army Verteran. Visit my web site at www.FortCampbellHousing.net
ROLAND: Thanks for your comment. I'll certainly take a look at your website and blog and keep you in mind for referrals in that area.
Great post. Thanks for the link to Slugging. Never heard of it and had to look at the site. It is really neat how such an informal system got started that long ago and still works to this day!
Great post. I learned something new about the Pentagon.
Brian: Great post. My son is a Lt. Commander stationed at the Pentagon. He commutes in from Fairfax. He said the trains are packed with commuters. I'm very proud of my son and I'm looking forward to a visit there this spring to see the Pentagon and visit the malls nearby! I love mall shopping!
KIM: Thanks for your comment. Slugging is quite an interesting local phenomenon. Almost a way of life for many D.C. area commuters.
MICHELLE: Thanks for your comment and compliment.
BONNIE: Thanks for your comment. Please thank your son for his service to our country. If you have a chance, when you visit, please give me a ring -- I always enjoy getting together with other Active Rain bloggers.
Brian- I learn something new every day and you I just learned about the Pentagon, something I knew very little about. Katerina
KATERINA: The Pentagon is really an amazing place. I may have mentioned it before -- back in college I had the wonderful opportunity to have a behind the scenes insider's tour of the Pentagon with a retired 4 star admiral.
Brian:
Thank you for your appreciation of my son's service. I will definitely give you a call when I make it up this spring. I'm relatively new to Active Rain - sort of and I am loving everything I am learning and all the people who are here. I tell all my friends and I have to get their e-mail addresses and invite them to join. Its a great place for those of us who are new to the industry and those who have years of experience to share.
