Looking for Some Fun? Upcoming Events in the D.C. Area

Museums, movies, monuments, memorials, music -- D.C.'s got it all (and that's just the 'm's). If you live in the area or you are visiting and looking for some fun, here's a short list of upcoming events that might interest you. Should you be considering a move to the D.C. or Northern Virginia region, this sampling will give you an idea of the activities and culture that the area has to offer.

MOVIE

Rambo's Back!

While it got mixed reviews and has become cliche at this point, Sylvester Stallone's latest Rambo movie was released yesterday. I don't know what number he's up to at this point. If you want to pass up more intellectual fare, you can spend two hours at the local movie theater listening to Stallone grunt and groan in what's sure to be a good old fashioned shoot 'em up! Sure to be fun, if nothing else. Rambo is playing at theaters all over the D.C. area, including AMC Hoffman Center 22 in Alexandria, Kingstowne 16 in Kingstowne, Phoenix Theatres Union Station 9 where you can also dine and shop at the Union Station stores, and AMC Loews Georgetown 14 allowing you to catch a gourmet meal in Georgetown before or after the movie.

MUSIC

Jon Bon Jovi takes D.C. by storm

Get your tickets now before they sell out for Bon Jovi's Lost Highway World Tour stopping in at D.C.'s Verizon Center on February 28th. If you haven't seen him in a while, Bon Jovi has restyled himself from his eighties look and is back on tour with no material and the good old classics. New Jersey comes to D.C. for one night only.

Iota Club & CafeNorth Arlington has become a veritable hotbed of nightlife and the bars and nightclubs in Clarendon feature live music of local performers just about every night of the week. One popular joint is Iota Club and Cafe at 2832 Wilson Boulevard. Some of their upcoming bands include Sons of Bill on February 1st, Honor by August on February 2nd, and Justin Jones and the Driving Rain on February 15th. The cover for each of these performances is only $10. Take a look at their full schedule online.

THEATER

This is not The Little Theatre. The Little Theatre is bigger than this.

The Little Theatre of Alexandria at 600 Wolfe Street in Alexandria certainly lives up to its name and is an enjoyable place to see a stage production. Now playing through February 2nd is "Saturday, Sunday, Monday" about an extended Italian family and the meal they prepare and eat on stage. This production is often referred to as "The Best Smelling Show on Broadway." Check the theater calendar for other upcoming shows.

SPORTS

HockeyAre you a sports fan? The D.C. area has lots to offer year-round with professional football, baseball (new Washington Nationals stadium opening soon), basketball, hockey, and soccer. Join the Washington Capitals next Thursday night, January 31st as they take the ice and take on the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Center.

That's just a small sampling of the many fun activities in the D.C. area.

How old IS Stallone?  I hear his next Rambo movie is "Rambo: Escape from the Old Folks Home".

Hi Brian,
No doubt about it, D.C is a happening place.  I love the museums, zoo, restaurants and  theatres.

Brian,

It is a shame that many of the people that live in the area become inured to the many wonderful things to do here. The mundane process of living (commuting back and forth, shopping, etc) creates this horrid haze that falls over us and we forget the pure beauty of why we live here. DC is a Capital City!

To answer James' question above, Stallone is 61 now (wow!).  I bet the Bon Jovi show would be fun, assuming they do some of their 80's stuff.

Hi Brian...Tom Plant has been hectoring me for a while now, on your behalf, so I'm trying to get back into the rain. Thanks for your friendship.

I don't know if your movie theaters are showing it, but I'm going with some friends to the IMAX theater in Ontario today to see U23D, a 3-D concert film of U2's recent tour. Ebert and Roeper liked it, and I'm a huge fan. So, if it's playing in D.C., there's my recommendation.

Rock on.

JAMES:  That's funny.  Looks like Jason has answered your question about Stallone.

CYNTHIA:  D.C. is a happening place.  I've enjoyed having it as my home for the last 12.5 years.

JOHN:  Thanks for your comment.  D.C. is a Capital City!  There's so much to do and so much to see that we often forget when we live here.  Sometimes we just need to be tourists in our own town and soak up the culture and activity.

JASON:  Thanks for checking on Stallone.  Bon Jovi would likely be a fun show, though I just checked Ticketmaster and it's already sold out.

JOEY:  Sorry Tom's been a thorn in your side, but I for one would be happy to see you more active here again.   U23D is playing in D.C. and they had a big review of it in the newspaper the other day with rave reviews.  I may try to catch it.  I saw them live years ago and they put on a terrific show.

It could be pure torture to sit in the audience during the best smelling show on broadway!  Perhaps a pre-theater dinner is required.   Any suggestions for local restaurant with great pre-theater dining? (or maybe another blog post) :0)

Brian  Those are interesting events, but I am surprised  you didn't promote the "BIG PARADE" in Old Town that we can all satnd shivering,  Karen

GINGER:  Oh, there's lots of terrific restaurants in Old Town Alexandria.  Maybe later.

KAREN:  The President's Day Parade is coming on February 18th, so I've still got time to promote it.  It usually is quite a cold one!  As a Shriner, many of my friends are marching in the parade, and I might even do so as well.

We truly do live in an amazing place, don't we Brian?  I'm guilty of taking it all for granted, much of the time, and I'm so glad when I do venture out to take advantage of the culture, monuments and events that are so nearby.

MARGARET:  Yes we do, and I'm happy to be a D.C. area resident.  Every time I go and take advantage of all the culture and resources of our area, I always feel guilty for those things that I miss and resolve to do a better job of enjoying everything our region has to offer.

Brian - You know what a fan I am of the DC area. Sounds like a lot of wonderful opportunities out there.

TOM:  There's always something great going on around here.
