Live Long & Prosper

Live Long & ProsperLive Long & Prosper!

Come to Northern Virginia and you just may be greeted by that famous Vulcan blessing and hand salute. The Northern Virginia area comprises Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun and Prince William Counties, as well as the independent cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Manassas.

Today's Washington Post reported that "N. Virginia Trails State in Deaths, Report Shows" The first paragraph of this article basically says it all:

"About 57,000 people die in Virginia every year. Statistically
speaking, they're less likely to die in Northern Virginia than
elsewhere in the state,
a new study shows."

The study examined different categories of deaths from accidents, homicides, and child deaths, to suicides. While "the statewide suicide rate is 11.2 per 100,000 people; Fairfax's suicide rate was 8.4." Similarly, suicides plummeted in 2006 from 27 to 11 in Arlington County. Do you think there's any correlation with the fact that Arlington's housing market hasn't suffered as much as some of the other jurisdictions in Virginia?

Northern Virginia remains a safe place to live. While the latest U.S. Census results peg Northern Virginia's population as 32% of the state's total, "Homicides in Northern Virginia were disproportionately low. Only Fairfax and Prince William counties had more than 10 homicides, both far below their population shares."

Besides living longer, Northern Virginia is a place to prosper. Between excellent schools, proximity to the nation's capital in Washington D.C., phenomenal job growth, major universities, museums, arts & culture, you'll find yourself enjoying life in Northern Virginia.

Interesting statistic, Brian.  And great tie-in for why someone should live in Arlington.

Unless, of course, you're on Route 95 South on Friday afternoon where there are probably more incidences of road rage than any place around.  Or, possibly the George Washington Memorian Parkway headed north about 8:00 a.m.

MARGARET:  Thanks for your comment.  Thought the statistics were interesting when I read them in the paper today.

LENN:  Thank goodness I don't need to commute in the heavy traffic.  Yes, there's bound to be accidents and road rage.

Brian - Only you could think to incorporate a home search with Star Trek...I love it :)

BILL:  Thanks.  I appreciate the compliment!

Brian, Being a big Star Trek fan from way back I had to check your post out.  Your Northern Virginia statistic is a great statistic to have.

MARCHEL:  Thanks for your comment.  I'm a fan of the original series and The Next Generation.  Beyond those, I'm not too familiar with the more recent incarnations.

Brian, I would be a fan from the same era.  I loved the original series and I loved the movies that spun off of the original and The Next Generation.    I kind of liked the one that was at the space station but from there I didn't keep track.  I hear the series William Shatner in is good but he will always be Captain Kirk to me so hard to watch in anything else.

Hi Brian,
Interesting statistics and you've shared them in a creative and appealing way.

Brian-are you a star trek fan??? I am...interesting stat's...It seems I would rather live in Northern Virginia.  Sounds like Daytona Beach...we could use some more growth and commerce here!

MARCHEL:  I don't watch Shatner's new series Boston Legal either.  He's permanently etched in my mind as Captain Kirk as well.  And as the Priceline guy.

CYNTHIA:  Thanks for your comment and compliment.

MIDORI:  Yes, I am a Star Trek fan, though I'm not a Trekkie.  Haven't actually watched in quite some time.  Thanks for your comment.

Northern VA is always a fun place to live.

What uplifting facts on a morbid subject!  LOL!

Brian - Great promotional information for Northern Virginia, they should be looking to make you their poster boy for selling the State to the nation, no make that the world.

MICHELLE:  Thanks for your comment.  It certainly is!

TCHAKA:  Just fashion me a spin doctor.

KATHY:  Thanks for your comment and compliment!

I get what your saying. Just not sure that death is what folks are thinking about when looking at NoVa. It seems like a ad slot from the movie "Scrooge" (Bill Murray).

Live in Northern Virginia or YOU WILL DIE.

:-)

Brian, that's interesting, we don't have the population and traffic of NOVA but have a lot of fatalities involving one car on our back roads.

SCOTT:  Thanks for your comment.  It did take a bit of spin to write the post.  I did think it was newsworthy, even though I'm not saying live here or die!

DEBBIE:  Thanks for your comment.  Traffic, as you know, is a big problem here.

Brian, Cute! Maybe it's something in the water. Then again, maybe it's the air. Did you vote today?

Bill Roberts

BILL: Maybe it is the water or the air.  Yes, both my wife and I cast our votes in today's Virginia primary.
