Are A-Rod's Problems and the Mortgage Industry's Problems Related

ARE A-ROD'S PROBLEMS AND THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY'S PROBLEMS RELATED?

People are trying to determine the reasons for the poor performance of Alex Rodriguez last year. Here are some theories:

  • He was concerned that his contract talks would result in too little money, which would force him to take a second job;
  • He was preoccuppied with his daughter's future for whom, it was recently revealed, he has been planning an arranged marriage to teammate, Andy Pettite;
  • He was worried about rumors that he was involved with Texas Rangers players and managers on hiding the use of steroids;
  • He was still bitter, eventhough he kept it to himself, about having to pick up the slack for Derek Jeter who was in his positon of shortstop;
  • The low key athlete had problems dealing with the in your face New York media;
  • The what have you done for me lately New York fans were too hard on him;
  • . . .

Wait a minute. What poor performance? He was the AL MVP; he hit .314 with 54 homeruns and 156 RBI.

It's easy to find reasons for a problem, even when the problem doesn't exist.

What about the problems in the mortgage industry? Here are some theories for its demise:

  • Borrowers were living above their means, taking what they could today and not worrying about tomorrow;
  • Lenders were not providing full disclosure for the terms of their products;
  • Everyone thought that the market values would continue to rise;
  • 1% teaser rates and adjustable rate mortgages were bound to catch up to people;
  • . . .

Wait a minute. Okay some of these conditions do exist, similar to those related to A-Rod, but have they really resulted in a major mortgage problem. Just because the media says it is so, does not mean that it is so.
