Leap Year -- that once-every-four-years phenomenon in which February, the red-headed stepchild of the calendar, gets to be almost as long as its cohorts.
No, Leap Years were not just invented to confuse us and make us write March 1 on our checks a day early. It's not the universe's version of April Fool's Day (because then it would occur in April, wouldn't it?)
Leap Years actually exist to keep our calendar working properly, to keep it lined up with the solar calendar. And believe it or not, that extra day every four years (or a quarter day per year) really add up! In fact, over a one hundred year period, for example, the difference between the solar year and the calendar year would become 25 days! So instead of summer vacation starting in June, it would actually start in July. No way -- that's way too late for me!
