WHY I RENT

Many friends of mine have decided to buy houses, but I can not imagine why they would subject themselves to such agony.

Here are some of the many reasons why I rent:

• Unlike those many people who have purchased homes with adjustable rate mortgages, my payment is fixed for, at least, the term of my lease, which is usually one year;
• Instead of having to worry about the cost of maintaining my property, my landlord graciously pays for any repairs out of his own pocket;
• There is no need to keep up with my neighbors, as all of the apartments are the same; the landlord has foregone the cheap methods of painting with rollers and brushes and has invested in expensive spray painting machines to give a nice even finish to all the surfaces;
• The grounds around my home are always neatly manicured and I can tell that my landlord is trying to keep costs low as he employs low cost workers from Mexico;
• I get a relaxed feeling as I come home and see my building as the exterior of the building is a mood soothing shade of gray;
• With limited parking at my place, I always have an excuse not to invite people to my home; I can just go to their house; it's a lot easier and less expensive when someone else is throwing the party;
• When my children ask for a pet, like a dog, I simply point out that we don't have a yard so it would be very impractical; this really keeps the smell and allergy problems to a minimum;
• The mailboxes for the building are all at one location, which provides a great place for the neighbors to get together and chat; it's almost like the coffee machine at work where I spend countless hours chatting with coworkers;
• By renting, the burden of property appreciation goes to the landlord; I don't need possessions which will go up in value because they will only get taxed;
• I find it very easy to fall asleep, instead of counting sheep, I need only listen to the rhythmic pacing of my neighbor up above;
• Who needs a will; if you have no possessions, then you have nothing for any one to worry about when you are gone;
• and there are so many more reasons.

Gosh! Why would anybody want to buy a house?
