Like most areas of San Diego, La Jolla is facing some challenging times when it comes to real estate. Although the high end market, generally speaking, is somwhat insulated from the harsh realities other price points face, it is still a tough market for many. La Jolla, is sometimes said to mean "the jewel" (from the Spanish "la joya"), however it is believed to be derived from a Native American language, that of the La Jolla band of Luiseno Indians, who inhabited the area for centuries before the arrival of the Spanish.
42,808 residents within the city of San Diego, California call La Jolla home. Population figures are imprecise because La Jolla's borders are indistinct. Generally the community's border starts at Pacific Beach to the south and extends along the Pacific Ocean shore north to include Torrey Pines State Reserve ending at Del Mar, California. La Jolla is known for distinct neighborhoods like Bird Rock, Windansea, the La Jolla commercial "village", La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Farms, Torrey Pines, and Mount Soledad. La Jolla is also home to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the Scripps Pier.

La Jolla has several community groups which work to unify the voice of the community. The La Jolla Community Planning Association advises the City Council, Planning Commission, City Planning Department as well as other Governmental agency as appropriate in the initial preparation, adoption of, implementation of, or amendment to the General or Community Plan as it pertains to the La Jolla area. The non-profit La Jolla Town Council organization represents the interests of the La Jolla businesses that belong to the Council.

Popular sandy beaches, dotting the coastline from the south to the north, are:
