Tucson Adobe Homes...a Tucson Tradition

Tucson Adobe Homes and Adobe Brick Homes have been built in and around this area of Arizona for hundreds of years.
It was easier to built homes out of the natural desert dirt, than import wood from the surrounding mountains.
However, the composition of the mix of the Adobe has changed over the years, any many homes today consist of some concrete mix to prevent deterioration of the Adobe brick.
There are many different styles of homes using adobe.
There is the Arizona Ranch as featured above, and there is also the Tucson Santa Fe Style Home which is generally plastered on the outside.
One can also find the Tucson Territorial Style in many older and new adobe homes as featured below.

Many of the Tucson Adobe Brick homes have courtyards that give privacy from the street

Some adobe homes are built around inner courtyards that form a natural desert oasis

Typically the inside of the homes can be left with the natural adobe brick showing or can be painted typically in a light color. A milk wash paint was used years ago to coat the walls.

A good source for Adobe Brick and also craftsmen that can help in construction of an Adobe home is Clay Mine Adobe.
Many Adobe homes have wood ceilings depending on the character of the home, the cost of construction and the appointments afforded in the home.

Having owned an Adobe home in Tucson Az, it is very apparent that they do help to heat in the Winter and retain cooling in the Summer months by their shear thermal mass. They also have a feeling of warmth and add character to the home.
Adobe homes will also have fireplaces of various character from the Beehive to the Rumford depending on the Character of the Adobe Home Construction.
