Walmart is being proactive during the month of April and Earth Day. They have put out many commercials to get us to wake up and know we can make a big difference. Yes, we can all make a difference one person at time. In this case one light bulb at time.
They have figured out that if all of their 200 million consumers change just one light bulb to the energy efficient bulbs would be like taking 11 million cars off of the road.
Wow, that is pretty powerful to think that one little light bulb could make such a difference? So, lets try for an entire package and see where what improvements we can make as a group!
This got me thinking. Scary, but it did. I am big for giving settlement gifts. I think that I will now add a pack of energy efficient light bulbs to each settlement gift for each client and see if I can get even more folks to change these bulbs. I would also urge them to have their friends and family do the same! I am thinking that I will take them to the walk through and change them right then and there so they don't lay around the house.
What if we all added a pack of energy light bulbs to help the cause? I encourage you all to "give a pack" of energy efficient bulbs to your clients at settlement!!

Audrey, thanks for the great tips! Is it just me or do all of the light bulbs go out at the same time? I have 10 of them that popped within days of one another. I'll def get the energy efficient lightbulbs when I replace them!
Compact fluorescent light bulbs, long touted by environmentalists as a more efficient and longer-lasting alternative to the incandescent bulbs that have lighted homes for more than a century, are running into resistance from waste industry officials and some environmental scientists, who warn that the bulbs' poisonous innards pose a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought.

Lindsay, Maybe you could put one in the FSBO bag?
Peter, I know there are two sides to every story. I guess we have to figure out the lesser of two evils. A hundred years ago when our thermometers would break we would play with the mercury in our hands and watch it roll around on the floor. Now, schools are shutdown for such things? Guess it explains a lot about my generation? LOL!
Audrey, I think this is a great idea - not only "green" but practical. Kudos to you!
Audrey- At this point in our earths life span , if we (the human race) don't become better caretakers , we won't be blogging or discussing it much in the next 75 years or so. I say an attempt at a energy conscious decision by the masses is always a plus.
Anout 3 mths ago , we received 2 of those light bulbs in the mail to test out , they are great.
Laura
Audry, I didn't write the story, nor am I a scientist. I just wouldn't be so quick to jump from the frying pan and into the fire.
Laura, so true. Just think, the beaches are made on tiny individual grains of sand. . . Whoa, that was pretty deep ;)!!
Hi Peter, I don't take it that way. You TOTALLY have a point. My husband IS a scientist and argues both sides. I just think with the price of energy right now, what is the best thing? Seems this might help now? Thanks for you comments!
What a great suggestion! I've heard the amount of mercury in CFL bulbs is minimal, but there's a full discussion here which also includes proper disposal.
Audrey, You are the best! Thanks for the disposal suggestion!!
That is a great idea to give them as a gift to my clients. I never would have thought of that as a way to celebrate Earth day.
Todd, Thanks for stopping by. I am glad you think it is a good idea.
Audrey,
Great post. Thanks for sharing.
Jim
Hey, If we buy them at the small local hardware store we keep more of the money churning around our local economies too. Many stores that sell them also have recycling programs. DO be careful with them, and read up a bit on clean up. BEFORE YOU NEED TO! IT IS DIFFERENT THAN WITH INCANDESCENTS!
I for one am much more afraid of the long term exposure to Mercury that coal burning generating plants produce, than one time, very small spills, even in my home.
Audrey: Thanks for the post. I am trying to look for information for our high school Green School Week presentation and really want something that will interest Teenagers (we know how smart they are :-). I thought this will be a nice point to bring up.
Question on this fact - "They have figured out that if all of their 200 million consumers change just one light bulb to the energy efficient bulbs would be like taking 11 million cars off of the road. " Is that for the life of the light bulbs and one year of driving? If you have that info it'd be even better - just want to anticipate quesiton from the kids.
Thanks! Sylvia
Michael, I agree. Audrey Hoffman added the link for disposal information. Maybe I will edit this post and add that link to it so we have the information.
Sylvia, What a great idea with the kids! I am not sure about the length of time for the drivers? I got the information off of the Walmart website. They have quite a bit of information on the site. Sorry, I didn't think to put what the longevity is for making the difference. I will have to go back and check myself. Thanks for the heads up!
Jim, As always, thanks for coming to see me!
I'm using these in my house, even though the light isn't terribly flattering! But what the heck!
Patricia, me too. I was really resistant at first, but my husband found some that have a softer light, not that ugly florescent stuff.
I have started using these-I have heard that some last for up to 10 years!
Sandy, can you imagine? 10 years? Good for you!
Audrey - Great Idea! I've been really trying to be more "green"! We are changes out the bulbs in our own home, everyone can do little things that make a big difference.
Audrey, I have replaced 35 of the 55 lights in my house with CFLs over the past year. I give a 6-pack (Walmart $10) to sellers as part of my home prep package. Yes, mercury is a concern, but IMHO, the benefits outweigh the costs.
Debbie, I have been trying to do the same. I am an avid recycler, changing out the bulbs, and cutting down on neccessary trips in the car. It doesnt feel like much, but I guess if everyone did it, it would make a difference!
Erik, I agree. Look, in a few years those lightbulbs will garner another business to be built and developed for the disposal of the bulbs. We need relief from the stress of energy use and costs now! Good for you!
Audrey, I love the post and the thoughtfulness. I'll be picking some up the next time I'm at the store.
