Earthquake felt in Owensboro,KY

My husband and I were awakened early this am to some strange vibrations and noises. I initially told him it was probably just the wind, and that I had the windows opened and it just might be extra windy outside. He got up and looked around and said "you know it was probably from an earthquake." I secretly thought to myself, oh ok whatever you say,( I just wanted to go back to sleep...) and that he might be right, as I have never experienced one and I don't think he ever has either.

Well, he left for work not long after we were awakened and called me at just after 6 am to tell me that it was indeed from an earthquake in Illinois. I just thought wow, I can't hardly believe it and I am so glad no damage occurred. I wonder how many other people in Owensboro,KY felt it or were awakened by it? How many even have earthquake insurance?

Apparently, there are several seismic zones in and around the state of KY. The most significant one in KY is the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) located at the border of western Kentucky. Scientists have estimated that the probability of a magnitude 6 to 7 earthquake occurring in this seismic zone within the next 50 years is higher than 90%! Well, we just experienced (I guess) the aftermath or tremors felt from the one in Illinois. It appears to be that the chances of one occurring near where I live (Owensboro,KY) are pretty strong. It is a good thing I elected to pay for earthquake insurance, it could have been a disaster. How many Kentuckians have earthquake insurance? If you don't, you may want to reconsider. Since I am a Realtor,I am definitely going to have to recommend my clients get coverage for earthquakes. Any other Kentuckians feel it this morning?

Vickie - Love your customized header... Do you get many earthquakes, I just don't seem to remember any in the mid-west or Kentucky for that matter being reported.

WHen it hit y'all out there it was headline news here.  It was like having a warm sandy beach in the north pole or an ice glacier in the middle of arizona.  I love the look of your blog by the way. Great job!

Most of my extended family is in Owensboro, I had no idea there was earthquake possibilities there.  Thank you for the info!

Vickie - Oh my gosh! I don't know where my mind was. I didn't realize when I heard about the earthquake that you guys were in that area. Glad everyone is okay. I remember visiting my mother-in-law in Chattanooga, TN quite a while back and feeling a tremor. I didn't even know what it was. I thought it was a sonic boom like we did have quite a bit in Texas. I know the whole house shook then they announced it on the news.

Vickie, thank you for visiting my blog about setting up a fear button.  I hope you will help spread the word about how to do the fear button and maybe someday we will read about it helping somebody!

Being from California I was so amazed when I heard about the Illinois quake.  Here we moved to NC assuming we had left earthquakes behind....maybe they followed us?  BTW, I love your photos/background!

Vickie, I agree with the others, your background looks great.  I never, ever would have thought about earthquakes in your part of the country.   You'll have to do another post letting people know how the quest for earthquake insurance in KY goes.

Our Dog Buddy ( black lab) woke up this same night ( and he usually sleeps through the entire night) and woke Jeff wanting to go out - when he got outside - strangest thing - he walked to the edge of the driveway and just stood there looking left and right as if expecting something at this early morning hour? they say animals can sense tremors? i slept through it all we were too far north to have tremors be obvious...but others said their pet birds woke them chirping!

Glad you were ok Vickie,

Sincerely,

Grace

Vickie,

Some here in Dyersburg felt that quake but I did not.
