Kentucky Derby 134![]() Including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 156,635 people watched the race from Churchill Downs. Millions more watched on TV. None have denied that the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports lived up to its billing once more. As the 134th Kentucky Derby approaches, the hype has once again reached a fevered pitch here in Louisville. In a few hours, another 150,000+ will make their way to Churchill Downs and sit in the shadows of the Twin Spires. Throughout the day, conversations will range from jockeys' silks to ladies' hat, from track conditions to celebrity sightings, and from sure things to trifectas. Shortly after 6:00pm, betting windows will close, a full field will be loaded into the gates, a trumpet will sound, a bell will ring, the starting gates will fly open and twenty riders on twenty steeds will begin the chase for immortality.
