Iowa gets hit again...this time it's snow and ICE!

Round One of Phase Twelve (snow storms) started Saturday morning with spitting rain, turning to freezing rain, turning to sleet, turning to ice pellets by mid afternoon, turning to thunder snow (that's when it's thundering and lightning and snowing all at the same time) Saturday night. The crews at our villa were out early Sunday with heavy equipment trying to clear it all. They first plowed the snow which uncovered the ice. Then they salted the heck out of everything. Then they came in with this back hoe (top picture) and literally scraped all the ice off. The ice was probably over an inch thick! We usually don't get much ice here. That is saved for Missouri and Kansas where my brother, Rob Lang lives.

As I've stated before, we've been spoiled the past few years with mild temperatures and minimal snowfalls so I guess we're due. The Quad City area experienced a low temperature last night of 27 degrees and a high of 32 degrees which caused the wild combination and another 3.3" of snow/sleet/ice combination.

The total amount of snowfall since Dec 1 is 31.6" which is 6.4" more than "normal". According to the National Weather Service, here's the rest of the story:

Dang-this reminds me quite nicely about why I no longer live in Iowa!  Enjoyed my time there, though. =)

Lucky-Are you having fun yet?  Just want you to know today in Daytona Beach it was in the high 70's.  Don't worry we will probably complain when summer gets here!

Leigh,

Where did you used to live?  Thanks for dropping by, haven't heard from you lately.Marco Sunset

Midori,

We were in Marco last month for a week.  It was divine!  Just negotiated a time share resale so we'll be back again soon!

Lucky :)

Makaha HawaiiLuckily I live in Hawaii.  We got spring all year round.  I loved the picture of Marco Island.  here is one from Makaha, Hawaii.  You can't see them in the picture, but the Humpback Whales were just offshore.

Randy,

I wish there was a way to enlarge the photos on here.  When you get over 50, you need all the help you can get!

Thanks for the warm thoughts....maybe they'll help melt the snow here.

Aloha,

Lucky :)

I lived in West Des Moines-my sales territory was the entire state of Iowa, so I've seen every town, city, burg, spot on the map...and hit every 'tourist attraction' as well.  You could do some great Iowa posts on the World's Largest Swedish Coffee Pot, the Dvorak Highway, the World's Smallest Church, Birthplace of John Wayne.  All the things people just don't know!

Great ideas, Leigh, when I get time I'll have to do these!  Whatever, other than the obvious snow and cold, brought you to North Carolina?

Lucky :)
