How to save gas on Kauai

Kauai's The Bus

Don't Overlook The Kauai Bus

Kauai Bus Logo

With all the talk about the price of gasoline and how to save, many overlook the bus service we have here on Kauai. Actually it's surprisingly good as I have learned from personal experience. We only have 1 main road around the island which facilitates frequent service with a minimum of buses. They are normally right on schedule, typically 1 hour apart, and the drivers are courteous and helpful. Cost is only $1.50 per trip or $0.75 for youth and seniors. Best of all, they're air conditioned! That may not sound like a big deal to those who don't live here but most homes have no air conditioning so riding in a cool car or bus is one of life's little luxuries! Some retirees get on the bus and ride just to "talk story" and enjoy being cool. How much is gas in Hawaii? Maui seems to be the most expensive and I just purchased regular there for $4.44/gallon. Here on Kauai Costco has the lowest prices at around $4.08.

Visit www.kauai.gov/Government/Departments/TransportationAgency/tabid/58/Default.aspx for service details and schedules. The bad news? They don't run on Sundays and they're now getting crowded.

Aloha!

I miss Kauai, I had a condo overlooking the ocean, It is a beautiful island

Mahalo Richard, I would love to come check out the bus. But, it looks like I will be stuck in gloomy Oregon for awhile.  Gas at Costco in Salem was $3.89 on Thursday.  I am sure its gone up since then.

Aloha, Leslie

Richard -  The bus sounds like a good option...  Air-conditioning.  I'm in!

I paid $4.00 a gallon for gas today in New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Stuck in Oregon?  I bet it's nice there this time of year and I must come visit sometime.

Have never been to Hawaii, maybe sometime I will get to visit.  Thanks for commenting on my post. I'm sure it is beautiful there.

I started coming as a tourist and got hooked.  I miss my former home in Maryland but not enough to ever leave here.  Come on over if you dare!

I didn't know there was a bus service... same on Maui now too.

Hi Georgina,

Thanks for the tip about Maui.  As you may know I'll be living there part time soon and didn't know they had a bus service either.  Cool!  I've found it a good alternative to asking a friend to pick you up and drive you home when leaving your car for repairs.

Great idea. These days we all have to think more globally and greener.
