4 Summer Care Tips for Pets

Summer is upon us and we have already expecienced the hot hot weather. Here are some tips I found helpful for our four footed family members.

  • Never leave your pet alone in a car during hot weather. A car's inside temperature can increase as much as 40 degrees in an hour-with 80 percent of that increase within the first 30 minutes. On an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows cracked slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes!
  • Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets while they're enjoying the great outdoors so they can stay cool.
  • Pets and pools can equal disaster. Prevent free access to pools and always supervise a pet in a pool.
  • Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but extra care needs to be taken with older dogs, short-nosed dogs, and those with thick coats. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Keep in mind that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws.

Good tips Pam, we have to take care of our furry friends.

All the best!

Pam: Great information... I'm suprised at how many dogs I see left in cars.....

Kevin....my little furry friend is family and like having a perpetual 3 year old child that loves to snuggel.

Roland.....if we don't leave children in the car we should not leave out pupps in the car!

Pam, I am going to be 49 in September and I will have my first dog this summer.  Can't wait.  We are going to look for a puppy when we get back from vacation!  I have a few leads on puppies now and will look in mid July.

Pam, I just posted something similar, but it's geared more toward the beach and July 4th.  These are important things to remember!

I agree these are good tips...we often love and treat our dogs like family, but when it comes to things like cars, we tend to forget...

Good tips for animal owners, especially timely with all this hot weather we have been experiencing.

Great tips!  My dog, Cooper, loves to go with me in the car, but during the hot months, I always leave him at home.

I had him in the car with me one day a couple of years ago and it wasn't hot when I ran into a store for a quick trip (less than 10 minutes), but when I came back, the car was too hot and he was panting really hard.  I stopped at a drive thru and got him a big cup of ice water to drink and cooled him off with ice cubes.  I vowed NEVER to do that to him again.  It really scared me.

Pam - Excellent list.  Kind of hard to think that this isn't common sense for people that own dogs, but you always here the sad stories every year.  Thanks for the warning!

Pam:  It is actually against the law in my county (Prince William County, VA) to leave a pet unattended in a car.  That should be a law everywhere!
