The Kamaaina Test

                                                                      Sunset in Kaaawa

I commented yesterday on a blog written by fellow Century 21 agent, Celeste "Sally" Cheeseman.  In her blog I mentioned a test to determine if you are a Kamaaina.  For those from other parts of the country a Kamaaina is what we call locals in Hawaii.  Just living here does not make you a Kamaaina.  You must have been here a long time and be assimilated with the culture.

If you fail on any of these questions you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   1)      If you think a plate lunch means bringing out you best china you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   2)      If you think pidgin is a small bird that poops everywhere you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   3)      If you think shave ice is something that comes of the sidewalk in the winter you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   4)      If you say Bro for brother instead of Bra, you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   5)      If you do not what where Da Kine is and have to ask you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

Ok if you answered wrong to any of the above stop here.  You are not a Kamaaina.  If you have passed the first 5 you may continue, but beware they get tougher.

   6)      If you think Waianae is on the West coast of the island stop here you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   7)      If you think Spam is something that comes in the e-mail and not they premier meat for breakfast you are definitely not a Kamaaina.

   8)      If you think that you mothers sister is you aunt and not your aunty you guessed it go back to the beginning.

OK you are almost there.  The last two get harder:

   9)      If you are heading to the big city and say you are going to Honolulu instead of going town stop here.  2nd part of this one, you will be using Kamehameha Hwy and not 99.

   10)  The ultimate test: can you properly pronounce the following words and towns:

  • Kamaaina
  • Aiea
  • Waianae
  • Imua
  • Laie
  • Kaneohe
  • Da Kine
  • Kane
  • Wahine
  • Wahiawa
  • Kaaawa
  • Likelike
  • Maile

If you did not pass the test do not feel bad.  You are still welcome to visit or live in our beautiful paradise.  I would help you with the correct answers to the questions above; accept the real fun is learning them by living them.

PalmAloha to all.
