Sharpsburg Maryland - Washington County

Sharpsburg is a small town in Washington County, Maryland, approximately 13 miles south of Hagerstown, 18 miles West of Frederick and a short distance from Shepherdstown, West Virginia just over the Potomac River.  The town was named after Horatio Sharpe, colonial governor. Approximately 700 people live in Sharpsburg.

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Antietam was fought September 17, 1862, on what is now Antietam National Battlefield. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with almost 23,000 casualties. This victory was a turning point of the war because it stopped the Confederacy from advancing and winning an important battle on Northern soil. Sharpsburg celebrates an annual Heritage Festival in mid-September. Its Memorial Day commemorations are claimed to be among the oldest in the U.S.

Sharpsburg hasn't changed much since the 1800's and maintains its rich history and heritage. Today Sharpsburg is a small residential community with few commericial businesses.

At the Antietam National Battlefield visitors can enjoy biking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The park attracts an estimate of 205,000 visitors each year.

An estimated 68% of the homes in Sharpsburg are owner occupied. The towns housing isn't the newest - the average home age is greater here than you'll find elsewhere. In Sharpsburg, about 95% of commuters drive to work.
