Sports and Recreation Cont.
The centerpiece of Freestone's outdoor recreational facilities is undoubtedly the 22,000 square foot Skate Park, which brings in skateboarders and in-line skaters in from all over the area. Walking and running paths, bicycling routes, and even a horse trail are all available at the park, as Freestone's designers did the best they could to make sure that everyone who wanted to come and enjoy the outdoors in Gilbert, AZ would be made to feel at home here.
But for those who would like to work out indoors, the Freestone Park Recreational Center offers gym facilities, fitness classes, dance classes, and a whole panoply of fantastic exercise and recreational options for those who would like to escape the weather for at least a little while.
More Leisure in the Park
Freestone Park is the perfect place for a family picnic or outing. It has innumerable meticulously maintained picnic ramadas, which are available for rental for large gatherings. These ramadas are all near fun playground areas where the kids can entertain themselves for hours, and many have electric outlets provided for those who don't want to run their laptop batteries out or who would prefer to do their cooking the easy way. Shade trees are plentiful in the park, which makes Freestone a go-to destination for those looking to escape from the heat of the Arizona sun for awhile.
Two man-made lakes are a park centerpiece, one of which features a lovely cascading waterfall. Many ducks and geese call these lakes home, and they will be more than happy to accept handouts from park visitors carrying bread or other goodies.
The Freestone Park Amphitheater is another wonderful venue, as music lovers will be able to attend concerts throughout the year, relaxing beneath the Arizona sunset while listening to fabulous tunes as the stars gradually fill the sky. One really unique feature in Freestone Park is the steep hills that are used for ice block sledding. For those not familiar with this activity, it is just what it sounds like – you get on a big block of ice, and you slide down the hill screaming in terror and delight all the way to the bottom.

Breaking Free at Freestone Park in Gilbert, AZ: Part One
The town of Gilbert, Arizona has much to offer families and vacationers in the way of fun and recreation, especially with the incredible weather we have been having this winter. But of all the places to go and see in Gilbert, none provides quite the variety of interesting experience that can be found in the town's preeminent family destination, Freestone Park in Gilbert, AZ
This 65-plus acre oasis is a favorite destination for pleasure seekers of all ages, as just about anything that anyone might want to do in the great outdoors could be done, has been done, or is being done within the borders of this wonderful recreational retreat.
The Freestone Railroad
Freestone Park's centerpiece
is its replica 1880s style mini-train, which stands ready from September through May to carry children and other young-at-heart railroad enthusiasts on a three-quarters of a mile ride that circles Freestone Park at a fun, leisurely pace. While the Freestone Railroad is enough in itself to bring people back to the park again and again, the great news for young fun lovers is that the mini-train is only one part of a bigger carnival-style entertainment complex. In addition to the chance to relive the days of the transcontinental railroad, Freestone Park also has its own little amusement park that includes a dry land Wave Runner perfect for catching a few “desert waves”; an old-fashioned carousel with beautifully crafted wooden horses that will bring back memories of childhood for parents and grandparents alike; and a mini-ferris wheel that brings another traditional pleasure into the modern era.
This mini-amusement park can be rented in two-hour blocks for birthday celebrations or other parties Friday through Sunday, and birthday children will be able to ride the train as many times as they want for free. Parties can be arranged in a basic package, or in a more elaborate package that includes extra amenities like ice cream and balloons.
Sports and Recreation
Freestone Park has an amazing variety of sports and recreational offerings within its expansive borders. Soccer pitches, basketball courts, softball fields, sand volleyball pits, tennis courts, a driving range – each and every one can be found at Freestone, and all are popular venues for youth and adults who either belong to organized leagues, or who just like to get together with friends and family to have fun and get some exercise.
