Out and About in Litchfield Park - Things To Do This Weekend 1/27/12

Friday, January 27th
Celestial Petroglyph Hike at White Tank Park. Reservation required for this hike into a restricted area of the park where some very unusual petroglyphs can be viewed. Call 623-935-2505 to make your reservation. Hike can be too strenuous for small children and those with physical limitations due to some rock climbing and sand. No dogs allowed. Meet at Area 7 at 10am for this 2.5 hour hike. For more information visit www.maricopa.gov/parks. There is a $6 per vehicle park entry fee.
Saturday, January 28th
E-Waste & Shred Event at Estrella Mountain Community College Campus. Recycle your electronic waste from 8am to 1pm this Saturday. Bring items such as computers, batteries, printer cartridges, mobile phones and more. For a complete list of items visit www.avondale.org or call 623-935-8319.
Avondale Farmers Market. Held at Friendship Park each Saturday. Shop for fresh, locally-grown food along with products and hand-crafted goods. For more information visit www.arizonafarmersmarkets.com.
Peoria Farmers Market at Park West. According to their website this farmers market draws around 1,500 attendees and up to 75 vendors making it the largest and most diverse farmers market in the West Valley. They even have a petting zoo...For more information visit the Park West website. Park West is located at the 101 and Northern Ave.
Kids Photo Hike at White Tank Park. Kids need to bring a camera for this fun discovery-type scavenger hunt where they collect photos instead of items. Call ahead for reservations as space is limited to 15 children (must be accompanied by an adult). The .3 mile flat, easy hike will be along the Mule Deer Trail, meet at the Nature Center at 10am. Westgate Hot Rods & Classic Car Show in Glendale. Bring your car or just come to check out some cool cars! All cars are welcome to this family friendly event featuring hundreds of hot rods and classics at Westgate's Cruz-In. From 8am to 1pm. For more information visit the Westgate website.

Petz Place Farmers Market in Goodyear. Located in the Estrella Crossings parking lot at 3690 S Estrella Parkway. Tonopah Rob and others offer all-natural fresh local veggies and other goodies from 8 am to 1pm. for more information visit www.tonopahrob.com.
Bird Walk with Sonoran Audubon at Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Join the Sonoran Audubon for 2 hours of watching the fantastic bird life at Estrella Park. Over 150 different species can be found. Bring your own binoculars and books if you can as supplies are limited. Meet at east side of turf in dirt parking lot at 8am. For more information visit the Estrella Mountain Regional Park website. Saturday, January 21st
Litchfield Park Town Hall Meeting. Litchfield Park residents are invited to attend a Town Hall meeting from 9am to 11am at the Church of Litchfield Park. For more information visit the City of Litchfield Park website.
Avondale Farmers Market. 8am to noon at Friendship Park in Avondale. The market features produce, fresh locally grown foods, beef, pork, bread, roasted chilies, cheese, pasta and pastries. For more information visit the City of Avondale website.
Stargazing at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Watch a slide presentation and then view the night sky through a telescope with Dr. Tony LaConte. Meet at Area 4 about 7:15pm, program starts at 7:30pm. Bring a lawn chair. Program runs until 9:30pm. For more information visit www.maricopa.gov/parks. There is a $6 per vehicle park entry fee.

Arts in the Park Concert at Wigwam in Litchfield Park. From 3 to 5pm local country band Rondavous will perform on the front lawn of the Wigwam. Cowboy Campfire and Hay Ride at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. The White Tank Park will have a campfire, cowboy singer and a hayride from 7pm to 9pm. There will be hot tea, hot cocoa and cookies. Saturday, January 14th
Kiwanis/Litchfield Park Annual Winter Trout Fishing Derby. It is time again for the annual Trout Derby at the Tierra Verde Lake Park in Litchfield Park. The Kiwanis Club of Litchfield Park stocks the lake with approximately 1,000 trout for the event. Registration is required and there is a $6 per pole fee for adults and $4 per pole fee for kids 15 and under. Registration starts at 6am and the derby runs from 7am to 3pm. Black Rock Archeology Walk at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Check out the evidence left behind by the early people of the Arizona desert. This 1.5 mile hike on a easy trail (with some rock climbing) will take to you areas not usually accessible by the public. Meet at Area 4 at 10am for this 2 hour hike. No dogs allowed. Bird Walk with Sonoran Audubon at Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Every second Saturday of the month join the Sonoran Audubon to observe well over 160 different species at one of the best place to see birds in the Phoenix area. Bring your own binoculars and books or a limited number will be available. The walk starts at 8am and runs until 10am. there is a $6 per vehicle park entrance fee. Glendale Glitter & Glow Block Party. Head down to historic downtown Glendale for the last weekend of Glendale Glitters. The City of Glendale will be pulling out all the stops with 20 tethered hot-air balloons and 11 different bands performing rock, blues, country and pop music. 16 blocks will be closed off for this annual event that lights up downtown Glendale. Wigwam Farmer's Market. Shop for locally grown produce from farmer's like Duncan Family Farms every Sunday (thru April 29th) at the Wigwam Front Lawn from 8:30 to 12:30pm. Monday, January 16th
"Keeping the Dream Alive," Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in PebbleCreek. The Just Folk Association of PebbleCreek will be hosting their 2nd annual event in the Tuscany Ballroom and it will feature Valley professionals, spiritualists and entertainers and West Valley church and public officials. Friday, January 6th
Family Moonlight Hike at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Hike the Black Rock Long Loop Trail after sunset to see the desert from a different point of view. Bring your flashlight and meet in Area 4. No dogs please. This two hour hike will begin at 7pm. There is a $6 per vehicle park entry fee. The Big Read Kick-Off Crafting Gatsby Exhibition and Preview Party. This free event features original artwork inspired by the novel "The Great Gatsby" or that era. Located at the West Valley Arts Council from 6 to 8pm.. Visit the West Valley Arts Council website for more information.
Saturday, January 7th
20th Annual Litchfield Park Native American Art Festival "The Gathering." The City of Litchfield Park will be holding their annual Litchfield Park Native American Art Festival featuring the finest Southwest Native American artists this weekend, January 7th and 8th from 10am to 4pm. In addition there will be all day entertainment and food. This year's even will feature a tribute to Native military veterans. Admission is $5, veterans and active-duty military with ids and 12 and under are free. The festival will be located at Litchfield Elementary School. Creepy Crawlies of White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Meet at the White Tank Nature Center at 10am for a talk about the cold blooded creatures that live in our Arizona desert. Healthy Litchfield Park. Get the New Year started off right! At 1pm the City of Litchfield Park will host a Healthy Litchfied Park event on the Litchfield Park Library Lawn. This first event of many will feature a short community hike or jog through Litchfield Park.
