Alhambra Neighborhood - Search Phoenix Homes

Due to its fairly central location, living in the Alhambra neighborhood means easy access to all the downtown employment, entertainment, and cultural resources Phoenix has to offer. The village mostly contains mature, stable, single-family home neighborhoods. The historic district of the Alhambra Village has some gorgeous, well-preserved homes built primarily in the 1920s and 1930s.

This area of Phoenix took off back when neighborhoods were becoming popular in the late 40s and early 50s to meet the housing needs of a growing post-World War II population. Many of these new residents did not initially move to Phoenix, but were stationed at Luke Air Force Base, west of town. They eventually moved east to settle in this historic area of Phoenix.

The beautiful spanish name "Alhambra" was first used by W. J. Murphy, the developer/builder of the Arizona Canal to designate one of four north Phoenix areas that he subdivided and later developed with residential homes.

The eastern portion of the village features large homes and the historic, tree-lined Murphy Bridle Path, which runs along Central Avenue. This area first saw a population boost during the 20s and 30s, when wealthy families began building large estates north of the city limits.

The city's only historic district featuring homes built primarily from the 30s through the 50s is the Windsor Square Neighborhood, located in the central Uptown area. Built in 1857 and located at Central and Camelback, Uptown Plaza has the dubious distinction as Phoenix's first strip shopping center.

Alhambra Village is centered around the Spectrum Christown shopping center, built in the 60s and named after the Chris family, whose farm originally sat on the site of the mall.

Alhambra Village has faced the contradictory challenges of deterioration and enormous growth, both of which it is overcoming to regenerate its highly desirable suburban character.
