Portal, AZ

~ Good Morning, Sunshine! ~

Just in case you hadn't seen it before, THIS is the "crack of dawn." :)

Saturday morning saw me in Portal, Arizona, scoping out this tiny (60 residents) picturesque town that is a birding mecca for thousands each year from around the world. The mountains in the sunrise photo are in New Mexico; to get to Portal we drove into NM, headed south toward Rodeo, and then turned west on Portal Road. This ranger station, closed for the winter, sits at the entrance of one of the world's most beautiful canyons.

If you haven't checked out Arizona, you'll want to do that soon. Life is short. Give me a call and I'll share my secrets about our great state. Sshhh. Don't tell anyone...

~ Crossing Guard, Arizona Style ~

I'd never hiked the east face of the Chiricahuas until this past Saturday. I met a friend at 5:00 a.m. at the Triple T Truck Stop on Interstate 10, and we drove east for two hours to the New Mexico line. From there we drove south 1/2 hour on Route 80 until we came to the road to Portal, Arizona. (Right you are; we had to drive west back into Arizona.)

Portal, Arizona isn't very big. Maybe 60 people live there, and not all at once. We stopped downtown to take a photo of the Post Office.

In the spring and summer, this place is a mecca for birders, and I wanted to scout it out. I'll be back again in the spring.
