Obstacle-free driving can’t come soon enough for those who own North Scottsdale homes near Pinnacle Peak Road and Pima Road and for others who use this main artery regularly. As we weaved through the striped traffic barriers, my husband asked me for the umpteenth time (as if I have control over the situation) when the road construction was finally going to be done.  Last week I got confirmation from Howdy Hale of Aachen-Gardner Construction, that it is going to be the end of July! For the homeowners of North Scottsdale homes, this is none too soon for almost 1.5 years of construction to correct traffic-detouring roadway flooding and expand Pima Road to six lanes from Deer Valley Rd. to Pinnacle Peak Road.

• Alluvium, created by artist Brad Goldberg, is a model for the design of drainage culverts that cross the road at he washes along the length of Pinnacle Peak Road.  The artist was inspired by the idea of relating our beloved Pinnacle Peak Mountain to the intersection by using textures, colors, forms and plantings. A portion of the exposed concrete areas are embellished with a desert masonry technique originally developed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Taliesin West.

• A pedestrian underpass that crosses in a north/south direction on the east side of Pima Road at the intersection of Pinnacle Peak Road will be illuminated with a state of the art fiber optic lighting system. Residents of North Scottsdale homes will be able to safely walk and cross this intersection as they shop and dine in the area.
• The intersection of Pinnacle Peak Road and Pima Road currently under construction to become a six-lane parkway with landscaped median, turn lanes, grade-separated path crossing, bike lanes, sidewalks, curb and gutter, roadway drainage, intelligent transportation system facilities and noise mitigation.  It is part of the Pima Road improvements project undertaken by the City of Scottsdale from Deer Valley Road to Pinnacle Peak Road.  The intersection project directly follows the Pinnacle Peak master plan artist Brad Goldberg developed in August, 2007. The design guidelines present a prototype for the City of Scottsdale to consider in its use of innovative materials that emphasize permeability, recycling, and unobtrusive aesthetic design with natural materials.
