You will never have to pay to be listed as a top neighbor. Period. That important detail clarified, let's discuss how we arrive at two "top neighbors" for a given region:
Localism is a bustling collection of hyper-local communities, and the top neighbors should reflect those members who are most active. When ranking users in a given region, several factors are considered. To get your foot in the proverbial door, you need to have posted at least one "Localism" article or photo for the region.
The very best way to quickly rise to #1 is to post high-quality local content. Keeping a steady strem of incoming posts and photos will massively tilt the scales in your favor.
What doesn't count toward the top neighbor ranking? ActiveRain points and community sponsorships. The top neighbor spots will always go to the most active members in a region. We want to create a level playing field that encourages the growth of communities — talent and dedication are required to win the day.
I've donated blood many times in my lifetime and I donated blood yesterday. If I happen to be in an area where they are doing a blood drive, I'll donate if I'm eligible to do so.
A couple months ago I decided to donate blood after my workout at the Cimarron Center in Sun City Grand where I live. United Blood Services was all set up in the Agua Fria Room. I always feel pretty good about donating, once I get past the needle.
As it turns out, my iron level was a little too low so I wasn't able to donate. I was really disappointed.
United Blood Services really does a fantastic job of getting all of your information and making sure that they have you in their database. I say this because I received my updated donor card from them a couple weeks after my "non-donation" visit. I also have a donor card with American Red Cross.
The other thing that really impressed me was the fact that they called me a few weeks ago to let me know that they were doing another drive. I signed up on the spot.
Let's face it, we don't always think about giving blood. It's not like it's a pile of clothes that you see every day that you know you want to give to a charity.
Here a few facts about the human body, blood and donating:
The human body averages 10-12 pints of blood-1 pint equals 16oz & 16ozs equals approx. 1 pound. Blood weight in the human body consists of approximately 10-12 pounds.
Blood donors must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. The donation qualifications can very by state.
Blood is collected through community blood drives and donor centers in your community.
Blood collected is purchased by local hospitals and clinics.
You can donate blood for your own use which is called an autologous donation. You can also have others (friends, family etc...) donate for you specifically when planning a non-emergency surgery.
Blood is used for blood transfusions which is added to a patients own blood. A blood transfusion is also used to supplement various components of your blood with donated blood.
Blood is classified by 4 types; A, B, AB & O. In addition blood is classified by rhesus (Rh) factor. The Rh factor refers to a specific antigen, either positive or negative. If you have the antigen, then you're Rh positive. If you lack the antigen then you are Rh negative.
Blood transfusions are typically used with those with the exact type and Rh factor. However, type O can be given in the case of an emergency or life and death situation especially if there is short supply of an exact type and Rh factor match.
55% of human blood is Plasma (protens & antibodies) which is the largest single component of human blood.
Human blood is comprised of; red cells (40-50% of blood volume), white cells (1% of blood volume), platelets (help with clotting and help fight infection and plasma (55% of blood volume).
You can donate whole blood every 56 days given you are in good health and pass physical and health history reviews.
The process of donating blood takes about 30 minutes from registration to collection. You need to sit tight for at least 15 minutes after donating to make sure you don't have any negative side effects. Although rare one might feel light headed after donating.
One pint of blood is collected during the donation process. Your body will replenish the lost fluid within 24 hours.
When you really think about it, donating blood is a no-brainer. You just need to put it on your calendar. Or in my case, I get a phone call asking for my donation. I'm happy to help and appreciate the reminder.
I really have to wonder who's life I may have saved, prolonged or enhanced by my donation. I'll never know but I'm sure it's appreciated by those who needed it. It's pretty amazing when you think about the blood donation process, thank goodness it's an option.
