Tortoise Eye View: Blooming Cactus in Tucson Mountain Park

Tortoise-eye view of blooming cactus: Mike in Tucson

The perspective from which we view the world changes everything! The circle of brilliant pink flowers caught my eye as I was hiking in Tucson Mountain Park. Without the flowers, I might not have noticed the cactus.

Desert Tortoise: Mike in TucsonFrom six feet up in the air, this little cactus was a pretty insignificant part of my view of the landscape. Wondering to myself what this would look like from the perspective of the Desert Tortoise, I got down on my hands and knees, and then laid down full length on the ground.

What had been a tiny cactus suddenly became a fortified tower ringed with flowers, a significant part of the landscape. Nothing had changed... except my perspective. And that made all the difference.

Tucson, AZ: Tucson Mountain Sanctuary, Full Moon Setting

Saguaro Full Moon by Mike in Tucson

Tucson Mountain Park's entrance is only a mile or so from the community of Tucson Mountain Sanctuary.

I'm up and out at five thirty in the morning, and dawn's breaking in the east. In the western sky, the full moon is setting over this canyon wall. The coolness of the desert night is still with us, especially down on the canyon floor, and the sandy wash where I'm walking is easy on the feet.

By noon, the summer temperature will have soared to 103 degrees, but at 5:30 a.m. this might as well be another world -- a magical world for Tucsonans who, like me, are early risers.

Tucson Mountain Park is one of those very special places on the planet. Make plans to come visit. Who knows? You just might make Tucson Mountain Sanctuary your second home.

Life in Arizona's Green Desert: Tucson Mountain Sanctuary & Tucson Estates II

Looking east at Tucson Estates II from the Yetman trail in the Tucson mountains

The mountains that seems to be floating in the backround are the Santa Rita Mountains, part of the Coronado National Forest. The Santa Ritas form the Tucson valley's southern boundary. You're looking southeast with me from my vantage point along the David Yetman trail in the Tucson mountains.

Looking northeast from a vantage point below Tucson Estates IIIn the photo above, the cities of Tucson and South Tucson lie to your left. You wouldn't be able to see either city, however, or hear the sound of cars and trucks on Interstate 10, because the Tucson Mountains intervene (photo on right.)

Giant Saguaros are the predominant tree of the Arizona-Sonoran desertNestled in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains are the communities of Tucson Estates II (foreground above) and Tucson Mountain Sanctuary (left above.)

44,000 acres of green desert surround TE2 and Tucson Mountain Sanctuary, with scores of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Stands of giant saguaro cacti put you in mind of the old western movies with John Wayne. Actually, any movie with both John Wayne and saguaros was shot in part just over that mountain (photo with sign) at the Old Tucson Studios.

Interested? Homes in the two communities range in price from the mid $100,000s to $400,000 or so.

Mountain lion at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum

Ten minutes away, and still on the west side of the Tucson Mountains, is the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, one of the ten best zoos in the world. The emphasis is on natural habitat. The mountain lion on the right is one of their most well known "critters."

During the summer, when daytime temperatures climb over 100 degrees, the Desert Museum is open at night on Saturdays. With two excellent restaurants, it makes for an enchanted evening!
