Travelling south on Vancouver Island from Prospect Lake I featured in my last blog, or driving west and slightly north from downtown Victoria, you will find the rapidly growing areas of Colwood and Langford.
In recent years, many neighborhoods along with businesses catering to them have sprung up and continue to expand. Take for example the hugely successful development called Westhills and the famous Bear Mountain Resort and it's world-class golf.
This area of southern Vancouver Island is seen by many as being more affordable for the young growing family. And for some, it represents a great place to live away from the downtown core with easy access to the highway that leads north up the island to places like Nanaimo and Parksville with the great beaches, Mt. Washington for fabulous skiing (most snow in Canada!) and further north to Campbell River - a boaters paradise.
Two castles on Vancouver Island
Actually there is the Hatley Castle in Colwood - a must see. It was built in 1908 by James Dunsmuir, son of Robert Dunsmuir. It's in the large green area above Esquimalt Lagoon in the aerial photo above.
The father Robert was like Bill Gates of his time; incredibly rich (probably close to a $Billion in today's value) from his coal mine operations. Robert built a castle as well called Craigdarroch which he never lived in.
Most people think Vancouver on the mainland is the happening place. However, for those in the know, Vancouver ISLAND is the place to be.
