Fifty years in business is quite an accomplishment. However, when the 50th was celebrated back in 1908, that's really something!
Victoria's first newspaper, The Colonist began in 1858. Today, the paper is still in print however featuring a slightly different name: The Times Colonist.

In 1908, the population of Victoria was about 25,000 and by 1911 was 31,000.
For $2,100 a nice 5-room cottage could be purchased. Want to build? A lot could be had for $350!

Wishing all a great weekend!

Who is This Person and Why are They Important? | Back to School Series
Okay, so I know in my last post, I said tune back in next week for my next statue post, well next week came early. I decided that because there currently is not an unanswered post in one of my favorite groups at ActiveRain: Statues of the World, that I would go ahead and post this one. Also because this is a part of my back to school series, we need to keep those brains revved up even over the weekend.
Who is This Person, What City, State, Province, or Country is it in? Like Vegas Bob likes to say, here is a photo of a statue that I took a year or so ago and I can't remember who this person is and I need a little help.
So please tell me Who the person in this statue is, what city, state, province or country it is in, and why this person was immortalized in a statue!

The City of Victoria has recently erected a bronze statue of the Service Man Returning Home. As you can see from the picture, it depicts a uniformed military person down on one knee receiving his young daughter into his arms. The family dog, Fido, is there as well. The statue is proudly displayed in Victoria's Harbour.

The 348 foot Russian Naval Training Ship, Pallada is in town and is docked at the foot of Bastion Street in Victoria's quaint little harbour. Click here to see this ship under partial sail. Click here to see this ship under full sail.
The Pallada was built in 1989 in Gdansk, Poland. It has spent 22 years sailing the seas of the world and has covered approximately 520,000 nautical miles. The ship has called at more than 100 ports in 35 countries.
The three masted vessel is considered a 'tall ship' for obvious reasons.
The sailors on board were very friendly. Some spoke English. Some were shy.
The Pallada has been entered into the Guiness Book of World Records for being the fastest sailing ship at speeds of up to 18.7 knots under full sail.
The Pallada was open to visitors both yesterday and today. It was approximately a 45 minute wait in line to get on board.
