I took the plunge...

I finally did it. I talked about it long enough. I looked at it and talked about it so much the boss told me if I mentioned it again she was going to knock my lights out... and I think she meant it.

I've been using an old(er) Cannon SLR for more years than I care to remember. A couple of days ago the FedEx man delivered my new Cannon 40D DSLR. Now, where photography is concerned I'm certainly not as good as my buddy Richard Weisser or John & Margaret Hokkanen but I like to tinker with it. By the way, if you haven't had the chance to meet Richard or see the magic that John and Margaret can do with a camera then put your mouse in gear and click on over. They're all amazing people.

While out running errands with our friends from out of town this afternoon Dave leans over in the front seat and points out the ginormous flag flying over the Auto Trim Building. It's not often we have gale force winds in Fairbanks but today was a doozie and the flag was out in full force. Years ago I tried to talk Kathy into letting me put a similar flag in the center of our front yard but she was concerned planes would hit it while lining up to land at Eielson AFB so I settled for a 'normal' sized 'Ol Glory. We pass this beautiful flag every day on our way into Fairbanks and it never ceases to bring a smile to my face.

There's a running joke that if you're ever lost, just look for the Auto Trim flag and you'll have your bearings. As memory serves the flag is 15' x 25'... it's quite large. The 'video' above was a series of shots this afternoon and an experiment with Veoh. Hope you enjoy it!

Nice video Jesse. When I went to upgrade my camera, I looked at the Cannon line, but since all my glass was Nikkor or designed for Nikon I went with the D-50. I am drooling over the latest and greatest one though... Now I need to convince myself that this expense is justified... You know, Just as if I'd really need it.... LOL

Jesse - great video, especially with July 4 coming up!

Now you made me stand up first thing in the morning Jessie.  Great video and congrats on the new camera.  I look forward to seeing the "dividends on your investment" for us from your great photos.

Jesse - Man, I can't even go to a ballgame without crying when I hear the National Anthem.  Seriously!  Great video.  I am in line for a new camera soon - still can't make up my mind.

Jesse, this was beautiful.  Wonderful job.  Bertha's voice is just beautiful too!  Lovely job on the song.  On a serious note, (yes, I can be serious), I never heard of Veoh.

Jesse ~ Nice picture!  That flag is huge!  Good luck with your new camera; I expect we will be seeing some great photos in the future (although I think your past photos looked pretty good too!).

An auto dealership in our area has one of those giant flags, as well.  It's a much more prominent "sign" than any flashing neon ad they could possibly display.

Jesse, some pretty high winds for your area. We have those huge flags up and down our interstates here where the new auto dealers are. Great video with the Star Spangled Banner. Who is singing that?

Jessee, we have a car dealer here in Saline that flew huge flags like that on ALL their light poles. The township passed a new ordinance that you could only have them so big. It was terrible, the national media picked up the story, but the township didn't budge. Yesterday, my husband and I drove by and all small, barely able to see flags flew, made me sick.

Enjoy your new camera, sorry for getting off topic, but I'm still disquested with our township.

Jesse, that is a HUGE flag. It was kind of nice listening to the Star Spangled Banner this morning.  Congrats on the new camera.  I hope you enjoy it.

Here in Texas, where we are not having any rain....I think those clouds sure do look beautiful.  Wish they were hear.

Jesse thanks for sharing the fine on Veoh.com. I will check it out. That is a big flag.

Jesse...

I wore out the Nikon 8088 That I purchased in 1985. When I bought the D80 in 2006, I was afraid of the transition. But my old lenses not only fit but work properly, so all my filters still function normally.

The video brought a little tear to my eye, if there was a fly-by at the end I think I would have sobbed uncontrollably! Thanks for the mention, I appreciate it.

I have also featured this post in the Whacked Group! I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.

Jesse,

Great video and it brought tears to my eyes too!

How do you like the new camera?

Jesse, I love it.  What a great way to start my day.  We are all truly blessed to live in such a great country.  I need a new camera too.  I will have to check this one out.  We have a car dealership in our area that has one of those flags too.  You are right, you have to have some pretty big winds to make it stand up.  Great post since the 4th is coming up!!

Jesse,

Love the video and you are right about Richard being a really good photographer, I will check out John and Margaret.  Have you had an opportunity to visit Mike Jones blog and see the pic that he takes he is equally as good.

Thanks for the video and have a great week.

Nice camera! Nice way to break it in. I love huge flags!

What time of day did you film this because it looks really dark outside. I thought you got 18 hours of sunlight this time of year. Shows you how much I know about Alaska -- evidently not much! But nice video, Jesse.

Jesse,

We wanted to get a larger flag, but decided to stay with the 50 star one!!! Thanks,   Fran

Jesse, Good luck with your new toy camera. Looking forward to many of Jesse's productions now, so put on your director's hat.

Jesse- Thank you for your picture of the flag. Currently in the lower 48 they see it as dicrimination to fly old glory.....what have we become.

How fancy are you?  Mr big SHOT!

(06/23/08 04:59PM) — C Tann-Starr

Hey Jesse, that was pretty cool. I love my Nikons and don't know too much about your camera's features, but do know it is always good to buy the thing that you want, especially when it is also something that you need. Enjoy your day in the Rain. Regards, Carolyn.

Jesse...me wants one...I have wanted an SLR Digital for a long time.  I have an older Pentax regular SLR, and want to get a digital version to use my lenses...of course, then Real estate tanks...oh well!

Jeremy- Perhaps you should ask Santa.  That would mean you would have to stay on the 'good list'.  Never gonna happen, eh?

Good list???? No, no, no.  Santa likes Scotch... liquor the fat bastard jolly fellow up and he'll give Manson a new bauble or two. He's easy that way.

Wow Jesse!  Now is this a series of stills taken one after the other? Or is it a video camera? I noticed the same black SUV going down the road and disappearing!  Kind of like a video game...  Also, what were the other flags in the background?  I saw several  (2 per pole.)

GREAT PIC of Old Glory.

Great video and glad you like the new camera.  I have a similar cannon.  Sure does make your life easier when you have great equipment to depend on!

VERY nicely done! The editing was superb...I'll have to check out the Veoh site. (Though I'm not making any videos anytime soon!)
