Harrison Brothers Hardware is Huntsville's oldest operating hardware store, founded in 1879 by brothers James and Daniel Harrison. Following the death of the last Harrison (Daniels son John) in 1983, the Historic Huntsville Foundation purchased the property to carry on the tradition. They have done a fabulous job of preserving the store!
When I first stepped in to Harrison Brothers Hardware, I immediately took in the smells of the old hardwood flooring, enjoying the sounds of the squeaking floors.
Harrison Brothers Hardware is ran by all volunteers. Cliff, one of the 25 volunteers, was on duty that day and happily took the time to show me so many details I would have never noticed. Cliff has been volunteering his time at Harrison Brothers Hardware since 1991.
From nails to cast iron skillets, you will find a bit of everything. They even sell marbles! You will find the store FULL of things, stocked from floor to ceiling, literally. I found a beautiful crisp linen hand towel for myself. There are gorgeous old rolling ladders that reach to the ceiling for the goods nestled up high and a functioning rope elevator that is hand operated.
Harrison Brothers Hardware was a great way to spend my afternoon. Much thanks to Cliff for making it even more enjoyable by giving me such a wonderful tour! Take the family and experience it for yourself. (There is a toy section also:)
Harrison Brothers is open Weekdays from 9-5 and Saturdays 10-4. They are located at 124 South Side Square, in downtown Huntsville. They are located directly across the street from the Courthouse. You can reach them by calling 256-536-3631.

Ohi'm in love with this store and what a perfect Localism post - hope its featured! :-) It on my list of places to see when I visit you! :-)
What a cool store, Elizabeth...it looks like it should be the set of a movie!
Elizabeth, you did a superb job with Harrison Brothers. I love the sleds and also the marbles. I feel I am stepping back in time.
Oh gosh! Now I know where to go for those marbles I've lost!
Elizabeth, I love these old places and they have such a special warm and wonderful feeling. All the treasures. Life in the times when these stores thrived was a special time in our lives. And they had everything, even the weird little things that n one else had. I pray these places stay in our communities, what few there are left. The new hardware stores just could never compare. Need a metric size screw and they will have it and you only had to buy what your needed, not a whole box. Love this and I so appreciate that this place still exists.
I love this store!!! I definatley want to visit it if and when I get to Huntsville. How much fun would that be? Too bad so many have been eliminated because of the big boxes.
Elizabeth, I could have sooooo much fun in this store. I bet they have everything under the sun plus more. What a great find. thanks for sharing...I enjoyed every minute!
Elizabeth: What a wonderful place to visit!! I could get lost in that store
Elizabeth. I wish I had a store like that here. Our Tru Value closed here in town, so we have Ace...but that's not the same as your store. I would love to spend some time in there.
Hey Sis! I don't know how I missed this post but, you know how I love history--I LOVE it! Great post and I KNOW it's a great place to visit--do you get lost in there?! I could just spend the day looking in that store.
What a fun store! I don't know if we still have anything like that in downtown Birmingham anymore.....I'll have to check it out.
Love these types of stores..you just do not see them much anymore...I'll bet you can find some great stuff in there!
I have heard such wonderful things about this store. I had a couple friends who were in Huntsville last week and stopped it. They said it was like stepping back in time.
Elizabeth, that does look like the kind of travel destination experience for me.
I love hardwood floors! Love the smell, the sounds, the feel under my feet. Way better than carpet.
