Are You Filing Your Tax Returns Tomorrow Or Do You Need To Request An Extension?

Are you planning on filing your tax returns by the April 15th deadline? It's time to get moving!

In your hurry to get your returns in the mail, remember......

  • Include copies of your W-2s
  • Review returns for accuracy
  • Sign and date your returns
  • Don't forget to include your payment if taxes are due

I recommend paying a little extra for Certified Mail and requesting a return receipt for proof of delivery. It's a small cost for a little peace of mind.

You can request an extension of time to file your taxes. I did this last night by going to the IRS website. It was easy and quick. You will need to know the amount of taxes you have already paid toward your 2008 liability, as well as the total you expect you will owe. By the time I checked email this morning I had received a confirmation receipt and approval of my extension to file by October 15, 2009. Remember that this is only an extension of time to file your return; any tax owed should be paid now or you can expect to pay penalties and interest.

For more information go to the IRS Website. Here you will find downloadable forms, instructions, and much more.
