$20K Home by Rural Studio.

$20,000 home designed by Rural Studio is an undergraduate program at the School of Architecture at Auburn University in Alabama. The project began in 2005 and there have been about ten iterations of the house so far. The challenge of the project is to design a series of small affordable houses that can easily be replicated by local contractors.

The current project was completed about a month ago and is now occupied. The structure is 26 by 26 foot square with 530 interior square feet. With a budget of $20,000, about $13,000 going towards materials and $7,000 going to labor. Last year’s housed was on display in New York City at the MoMA.

There are some green features included in each design such as:

• 10 foot ceilings to help with cooling.
• Keeping maintenance costs low by picking proper materials.
• Keeping utilities cost low, especially heating and cooling. A previous $20K house has a typical operating cost of $35 a month in summer and $75 month in winter.
• Front porch outdoor living space.
