Downtown Searcy Arkansas is changing again. Stott's Drug Store.

Searcy court square

This old photo taken by my friend Paula when she was doing a Girl Scout's photography project is one of my favorite of Searcy Arkansas during the 40's, I think.

I've posted various pictures that she loaned me for my blog.

This photo shows what is now Quattlebaum Music Store and what is still Stott's Drug Store on the right side of the picture which is the South side of the Court Square.

Quattlebaum & Stott's

This photo shows Quattlebaum Music and Stott's Drugs as they were just a few months ago.

I was cruising downdown and snapped this photo.

This week, however, I was in the downtown area and noticed changes going on at Stott's Drug Store. The were pulling off all the "modern" front of the store and revealing the old stuff underneath.

They are restoring it to look like the old historic Searcy Arkansas.

Notice how the metal has been pulled off the front and you can see the old wood below with the charming old wood posts that made up the front of the building. Metal edged windows looked as if they were getting wooded edges.

It all ties in with the merchant leaders working together to keep downtown Searcy Arkansas a vital and important area. I applaud their success! Here are a couple of close-ups showing the old and the not-as-old.

Hi Barbara!
Very cool stuff!  It reminds me of my old chrome bath faucet and handles.  My fixtures were beautiful old styles, but in chrome.  I thought it would be cool to have them brassed, so I brought them to a plater in town.  When I returned a few days later, imagine my surprise when they told me that under the chrome was the original brass!  All they had to do was remove the chrome and polish!

Barbara, it is interesting to look at old pictures of old towns. Searcy looks a lot like downtown Franklin...

Gosh, Paula, that was exciting.  How much trouble was it to take off the chrome and polish?

Michael, seeing what was under the new stuff at that store was interesting.  I deliberately didn't put on the close-up of some bad termite damage in one spot.  I really like seeing downtowns restored.

LOVE all these pictures:  before and after and now.  Kudos to Stott's Drugstore for the facelift, but mainly for going retro and restoring back to the "good old days"....I'll definitely go by and look for myself when in Searcy this week.

To Michael Thornton about Franklin, Tenn.   I stayed in Franklin for 6 weeks in 1958: was doing my Public Health Nursing, part of Vanderbilt's cirriculum.  Franklin and Searcy do have some things in common.  I loved Franklin then, what's it like now?

Mrs Barbara,

My grandpa, Elvis Wallenda, did some real wailing in a city that looked much like that in the 1950's. I thought you might like this photo.

Anita, do drive by and do a closeup.

Nutsy, I'm so excited to know you have a singing relative!!  He sure can wiggle according to this photo and really has an Elvis look about him.  He needs a few sideburns, however.
