I love selling real estate and meeting new people! Sometime finding the right home can be a challenge, but the end result is very rewarding. When the children are eager to claim their bedroom and their eyes are full of excitement, I'm glad we found the right home!
When buyers have older children, I include them in the conversation when we are looking. If they play sports I drive them by the sports complex, school, parks, library, public pool and the shopping areas. I feel this may make it easier for them to adjust. Moving to a new place is a little scary to children, they have left their old friends behind and they wonder if they will fit in.
Keeping a cooler of soft drinks and some snacks is always a good idea! Kids get bored and a soft drink usually hits the spot!
It's very important to make the children feel they are a part of choosing the home. Does it have a fence for the dog? Are there other children in the neighborhood? How far is it from school? These are usually the questions they want answered. I truly believe if the kids are happy, everyone is happy!

These are great ideas but the kids can be a hand full as you put on your babysitter cape.
Damaging? what do you mean Keith?
Mary, cooler full of snacks and drinks is a fabulous idea!!!!! I really like the idea of introducing them to local schools and parks too. I bet this makes your clients feel right at home with you! I think that is super important. Love this post thanks for the tips.
Jennifer
I have clients coming in from out of town next week and they are bringing their children with them. I never thought to have a cooler in the back for drinks and snacks. What a great idea! I will be putting that one to use. Thanks!
Mary - Great post! Thanks for the idea :)
Mary, you are so gentle and kind. My rule is that kids can't eat in my car. And they surely couldn't eat in someone's house, could they. But I do believe in being nice to the kids too. Keith was right when he said they can be damaging.
Mary, you have some good ideas in here. I just want to caution against offering foods. Food allergies are becoming very common, and even older kids are not always good are policing what they eat. Even if the parents are there to refuse the foods for the kids, suddenly junior is now *starving* and has to have something to eat RIGHT NOW.
I'm speaking a mom of kids with multiple food allergies. I do enjoy working with families and make an effort to engage the kids, keeping them interested and part of the process without allowing them to run wild in dangerous or damaging ways while parents are distracted, but I would never offer foods after the experiences we have had in our family.
You are really getting into blogging lady and doing a great job. You speak so often from the heart and your post have warm and fuzzies
Latonia,
Thanks for the response, sometime kids are rowdy, but I've got grandchildren so I understand that. Have a great weekend.
Keith,
Thanks for the response, you really do have to watch kids, especially in occupied homes. But usually if they are fed they behave better. Have a great weekend.
Jennifer,
Thanks for the response. In the summertime I keep a cooler of soft drinks in my car, even if there are no kids. It is soooo hot here and when you are showing vacant homes you need something cold to drink.
Stephanie,
I'm glad you are putting my tip to use! You will see what a difference it makes. I keep a cooler in my car in the summertime, even if there are no children. In Arkansas it gets hot and a cold drink is refreshing to everyone! I hope you sell the buyers a home!
Maria,
Thanks for the response. Have a great weekend.
Barbara,
Thanks for the response. I wouldn't let them eat in someone's home, but I do let them eat in my car, my grandchildren do.
Brenda,
Thanks for the response. I always ask the parent if it is okay, so far I have never had a problem. But you are right, alot of people do have allergies. I did have one buyer get stung by a wasp, and she was allergic. Luckily, I had benedryl in my purse, I have allergies too! Have a great weekend!
Dick,
Thanks! I've got my taxes finished, and starting Monday I am going full speed on e-Pro! Have a great weekend!
Mary, you're right! Have to keep the kids happy!
Once I had buyers oohing and ahing over a house they really liked until the teenage son (who was a great kid) walked in and said, "Mom. Dad. I'd rather live in a tent!" We went back to the drawing board on that one!
Patricia,
Thanks for the response.
You better believe it! If the children are happy, everyone is happy. I know that first hand!!!! I've got 2...It is important to make the children "feel" like they are a part of the decision/process.
Thank you, Mary!
Yvette
Yvette,
Thank you for your response and for agreeing with me. Children do need to feel like they are important in the decision making, they are going to live there too! I like to make children feel important, it helps their self esteem.
