WHAT A WONDERFUL DISPLAY OF SPORTSMANSHIP AND COMPASSION!

I was watching the news and this wonderful story was being told, finally something positive from the media! Western Oregon and Central Washington girl's softball teams were in a tournament, it was the top of the second inning.

Western Oregon player, Sara Tucholsky, hit the ball over the fence. She rounded first base, almost to second, when her right knee blew out! She was in terrible pain as she crawled back to first base. There would be no home run. Her team could substitute a runner at first, but Sara would only get a single and 2 RBI'S. A player cannot assist their own team around the bases.

But wait, Central Washington softball player, Mallory Holtman, wanted to carry her around the bases. She asked her teammate, Liz Wallace, to help. They carried the opposing player around the bases, stopping at each base to let Sara touch base. WHAT SPORTSMANSHIP!

When asked why she helped the opposing team, Mallory said, "Sara hit the ball over the fence, she deserved the home run." WHAT COMPASSION!

We could all learn from this fine example of sportsmanship and compassion!

Mary,

That is a Great story, besides her knee, we can use some more like it.

Christopher

that's a great story. thanks mary.

I caught that this morning on "Good Morning, America" myself.  It is a terrific story and one we don't hear nearly offten enough.  Thanks for sharing.

WOW what a display of God like attitude and a way of saying to everyone that it is not always about winning but sometimes it is about caring for other people.  Remember the saying that goes something like "except by the grace of God, that could be me".  The story made me remember when I was in my second year of college playing baseball, having hit what should have been an easy triple, I tried to make a home run out of it.  I slid onto home base (safely according to the rules) to realize that my cletes had caught the  edge of the base and I could not get up.  I broke my ankle in tree places and dislocated it.  I was carried off the field by the other teams catcher after he stopped being sick hearing my foot snap.  Enough of that.  Great post.

Christopher,

Thanks for the response.  That story really touched me!  I know their parents are proud of them!

Ron,

Thanks!  I hope you get to see it on TV!  It was really an amazing thing to see them carry her around the bases.

Christopher,

I thought it was a wonderful story, and so unusual!  It's nice to hear something except gloom and doom!

Wayne,

I think it is a great example of love and compassion!  And, your story was too!

Talk about your basic win-win situation.  Congrats to all involved.

Wow, I sure don't see anything like that ever happening in my sons league!

That was a very good story, Mary.  It's the kind of thing your Mitzi would have done when she was young.

This happened just north of us here and we immediately sent the story out to my Daughters softball league e-mail roster. It really was cool of them and the best part is this was her first home run ever! The sad part is, that the injury is looking like it will be career ending!

I saw this on the news as well and was so touched.  I wonder if boys would have done this?

Bill,

That was definitely a win-win situation for everyone!  They were focused on something besides winning, and are to be applauded!  Thanks for the response!

Jennifer

That was a great story, those girls were focused on something besides winning!  I'm not sure about boys, but I bet they would!

Barbara,

Thanks for the compliment about Mitzi, I feel like she would have done the same thing.  You know girls are usually real compassionate!

Todd,

I hope her career is not over!  I didn't know it was her very first home run!  The girls on the other team are really to be applauded, not many would do that!  Thanks!

Diane,

I don't know if boys would have reacted the same, but I would like to think they would!  The girls showed love and compassion to an opposing team member, that is so unusual in this world!  Thanks for the response!
