Today's Back to School for Chandler, Arizona

It's 5am here in Chandler, Arizona and a beautiful 83degrees. We're scheduled for some isolated thunderstorms today, but that's o.k. Nothing is going to dampen my spirits today. Why? Because today is BACK TO SCHOOL for my little angels.

So soon, you ask? Yes!!! Here in Chandler - we're on a "modified year round" schedule. That means, we have a 7-8 week summer (not the 12 that I had growing up). The extra weeks off are taken in October and March. My kids attend school 180 days a year, but TODAY is the first day back!

Do I sound happy?! I am so thrilled that we will be able to return to some kind of normalcy around here. I long for the scheduled days of school and activities. Sure, I put more miles on my car from July - May, but it's all good. I love watching my son play baseball and my girls play or perform, and honestly, I'm looking forward to not hearing those words every parent absolutely abhors "I'm bored." Nope - no more being bored at our house.

At 6:15am, we'll start the rituals. Showers, breakfast, backpacks, carpool. As the PTO Prez of my "little diva's" school, we have a kindergarten tea this morning. I'm thrilled - and you know what? If you ask my kids - I'd bet that they are too!

Calie, I used to "line up" my summers with the kids to try and avoid the boredom!  It's difficult to figure out as many weeks as we have but it helped.  I was the "mean" mother, I threw them outside to play instead of spending half the day playing video games :)  Back to your schedule, how wonderful.

Calie,

Ah...I remember those days well!

It is interesting that even with our line of work, I notice a 'drop off' in the summer months, but as soon as school starts up again (in September here in the Northeast), people get back into their normal routine and start 'getting serious' about getting those houses sold!

I would imagine in your area everyone would love to have a few more weeks off in the months that aren't so darn hot!

Judy - you are absolutely right!  One really nice feature is two weeks off in October.  If we head to California, it's wonderful - because all their kids have just gone back to school in September.  Thanks for dropping by - come back again soon, ya hear?

Calie, What is a routine? :) We say we have a schedule around here we just don't know what it is until after it happens.  We home schooled for 12 years and our school was more or less year round. Like you we enjoyed vacations when others were in school. Have fun with your PTO duties.

Home schooled, Yvonne?  I admire your tenacity.  While I've thought about home schooling, I just can't seem to make the commitment to it.  Arizona is very proactive in home schooling and offers tons of resources to assist parents/caregivers/guardians in home schooling.  Now, you can even get everything free!  Thanks for sharing, Yvonne.  Ya'll come back now, k?
