Real Estate News: Make It Local

My clients read and watch the real estate news closely, but they don't always correctly understand what it means to them. I try to explain what I hear and read regularly in my blog so that it makes sense in the context of the Flagstaff home market. Listening to the national real estate news is a great way to get blogging ideas. I think you need to take the next step and make that national news relevant at the local level.Construction

One example is my post this week about New Home Construction Statistics. Mid-week, the U.S. Commerce Department issued first quarter statistics for new home starts and new home building permits. Do you know the difference? And how the different data is gathered? You can provide that information to your clients by linking to the U.S. Bureau of the Census website.

The media was carrying the new construction statistical news as more evidence of doom and gloom for the economy. (For example, the Wall Street Journal: Slide in Housing Starts Said to Be Stalling Economy.) But it's also evidence that the housing markets are going to be reducing inventory - a necessary shift before prices can again come up. That's a bit of a positive spin that one never hears on the radio but which our clients need to hear.

It's also interesting to get your local building permit statistics and let your clients know what's happening in your own market. Our city website publishes a monthly report of building permits issued, which includes year-to-date numbers and comparisons to last year. I've included that information for Flagstaff in several of my posts, most recently this week.

Happy real estate blogging!

Ann,

You're right.   The housing report was a sign that the market is adjusting to the new realities of the world we live in.   Painful, but necessary in the long run.

Tom

Ann, I can tell you as a blogger, especially a blogger that is now mostly writing on wordpress instead of AR that the readers are out there.  I have so many people contact me that say "i've been reading for months" or "we never miss an event because of your blog".  (Eh, I also get a few lippy ones, but it's worth it)

You're on the money keeping consumers informed.

Chris -- yes, my weekly events post is the most popular. I e-mail a link to it to over 800 contacts each week and this week I got over 100 hits on the post within the 2 hours after the message went out and have gotten only positive feedback -- and quite a bit of it.

Ann, what do you use for contact, just regular email, constant contact, top producer?  Just curious.  None of my bee's wax, of course so take that with the question.  :)

Often we neglect to realize real estate news that is understandable to us as professionals can be difficult for the rest of the world to understand. Even basic real estate vocabulary can need a good explanation.

Hey Ann~ We all need to spread more GOOD NEWS to our clients and friends, daily.

Chris -- I use Top Producer connected to Outlook for to keep track of individual e-mails. The mass e-mail I mentioned earlier is sent using the Top Producer mass e-mail function. I have a group of contact types set up and labelled "weekly events blog" -- it goes to people in my sphere of influence, past clients, current clients and local buyer prospects.
