Mesa, Arizona Monsoon Lightening Shot - Done with My Flip Video!!!

Okay, those of us who've been around for awhile have heard all of the raves and shouts about the Flip Video? Despite several attempts to capture lightening shots with my Nikon SLR and my Sony Cyber-Shot, I could not get a good shot. So, I jumped online to ask the photo experts their opinion. See them here: I received a bevy of good tips including a link from Bryce Mohan explaining the idea behind shooting fireworks - which just so happened I had posted on when he shared - here. You will see that I had managed to take some fairly decent shots of fireworks, but had not thought about doing the same thing for lightening.

So, are you ready? Drumroll, please! I leisurely went outside last evening as the lightening storms had started, and took my Flip Video. I "thought" there were some good bolt shots, and actually did find one. I don't know if those of you who have a Flip know it or not, but you can capture a shot from your video - which is exactly what I did. I came up with this....Not bad, huh?

Lightening bolt

I thought this turned out really cool. AND it was taken with the Flip!!! Yet another good reason to have that handy little camera in your possession.

Our monsoons the last week have been absolutely amazing.....lots of wind, rain, and damage and LOUD claps of thunder......I grew up here with the monsoons, and one thing I can say? They are never, ever the same. But we LOVE the moisture we get. ;-)

Great shot....I gotta try that...except if we have lightening going on ...it goes across the sky...

Didnt know you could do that with the camera. Great shot!

Congrats on your shot!!  I've been thinking about getting the flip video but have not made the jump yet.  Which one do you have?

That's incredible, Teri. Wow. Amazing and unbelievable. I need a new camera, or maybe I need a new person behind the camera! I rarely see this opportunity. Oh, wait, it doesn't rain in California where I live until October.

Sally, this was taken from just around the corner of my home....clearest shot I could get. ;-)

Jeannette, thanks...where there's a will, there's a way I guess. ;-)

Marchel, I have the Flip Video with 60 minutes...great little camera. ;-)

Elizabeth, you must really feel strong about my photo...seeing that you posted two comments. ;-)

'Just got my Flip video last week, and I'm still experimenting with it.  'Looks like I have a lot to learn!

Margaret, it is very easy, but there is more to it than meets the eye...I just discovered this little trick! ;-)

Teri- Nice shot...heck I remember sitting for hours trying to get the lightning over the San Francisco Peaks...never did get it.  I think I will try this thanks.

perfecto - I love the photo - nice job

Kathy, I tried that...didn't work until I tried this technique. ;-)

Thesa, thanks so much.....;-)

Powerful pic Teri, even as a techie I'm constantly amazed at how far things have come so quickly. Combine that with a good eye/talent and voila, beautiful photos like this! Have a great holiday!

Marti, thanks - it was a fun experiment. Just think where we were even ten year's ago? ;-) I'm hoping you have a great holiday as well - or should I say? What is a holiday? ;-)

Teri-

Very cool, good job! Can't wait to see more!

Bryant, thanks - I love figuring stuff out. ;-)

Great idea, Teri. I'd never thought of taking a movie and then picking the right shot - that will certainly save all the shots that were just a bit too early or late. Fortunately with digital cameras we're not wasting film or developing costs to experiment.

Sharon, thanks - quite by accident I must admit since I didn't know that feature was there. ;-)

That looks like our 'heat lightning' that we have in the summer at nights.  No rain, storms, or thunder, just lightning bolts in the sky.  I am used to it now, but 20 years ago, I was fascinated!

Ronald, that's very interesting....we were getting the thunder, the rain AND the lightening.  It's all about our monsoons...love them.;-)

Teri - Ambiant light sometimes provides us with some really great shots ... I love watching a storm come across the lake.

Kathy, you're right...and learning just "how" to get that perfect shot is a treat! Especially when it turns out! ;-)

Hi Teri-I'm checking out your blog and this is the first one to comment on, on the list so far. That is an awesome pic. I also clicked on the"click here" places and of course had to bookmark those pages to go back and check out. I'm in college taking 6 classes so trying to juggle everything. Which Flip Video do you have. I wasn't sure what you meant by the 60 min one. I googled flip video and found 3:

1. The orig-129.00

2. The Ultra-149.00

3. Flip Mino-179.00

So much new stuff out there. It is hard to keep up with everything. Talk to you later. Going to look at more day trips you've posted. Thank you so much

Pat, mine just says Flip Video on the front and pure video on the back. I "think" I spent about $150 at Walmart, so it might be the middle one. ;-)
