Forbes Magazine has just announced America's safest cities for 2008, and the Phoenix Metropolitan area was ranked 14th overall, just behind San Diego. Forbes looked at the country's 40 largest metropolitan areas in four different categories. The Phoenix Metropolitan area is the 12th largest metropolitan city based on population. The categories to determine America's safest cities included workplace death rates, traffic death rates, natural disaster risk, and violent crime rates.

The Phoenix Metropolitan area ranked 17th in violent crimes and workplace fatality rates, 27th for traffic death rates, but 5th in natural disaster risk.
