CFL Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: CFL's

Home refrigerators in the U.S. alone use the electricity of 25 large power plants every year. Some of the new energy-smart refrigerators use less electricity than a light bulb.

With incandescent light bulbs, only 10 percent of the electricity used is turned into light; the other 90-percent is wasted as heat. A compact fluorescent light bulb uses 75 percent less energy than a regular bulb and it can last up to four years.

The best fixtures to use qualified CFLs in are usually found in the following areas of your home:

  • family and living rooms
  • kitchen
  • dining room
  • bedrooms
  • outdoors

If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. You should also check the lumen rating to find the right CFL. The higher the lumen rating, the greater the light output.

CFL Disposal : CFLs contain a small amount of mercury and should be disposed of properly, ideally recycled.

Broken CFL? If a CFL should break in your home, EPA provides clean-up guidelines that can be performed by the general public.

Good post!  I have passed out the energy lightbulbs as popbys to my clients & friends!  Those tv's(especially the new flat screens) use a lot of juice, too.  I unplug them at night and if we are on vacation.

Great info. The only thing I don't like about those new little bulbs is many floresce a purple light. Have you found any good ones that don't?

Gosh I don't enjoy being the hold-out, but I have issues with CFL's. First, the light quality is offensive to my sense of aesthetics, and second, as with all fluorescents, the mercury is just bad stuff. There's no way to really dispose of it without negatively impacting the environment.

The number one waste of energy is through our heating system ductwork. We all owe it to ourselves and the planet to have a home energy audit and see what we can do to get a higher rating.

Great post Candace :)

This is great information Candace!

Hey Candace - My father-in-law has used these in most of his light fixtures for many years now.  I have two or three in our home, mainly in lamps that stay on more often.  Interesting post!

Candace, I finally picked a few of these bulbs up to try them; they are not in yet but I'm curious to see if it changes the lighting effect.  And I am also just about to purchase a refridgerator and just read that the most energy efficient ones have the freezer on the bottom, not the top.  I'm going to look into those as well.  Thank you for an "enlightening" post :)

Frances - That's what I was thinking, this would be a great buyer's gift to include in a nice buyer's basket!! Good idea on unplugging while out of town or long periods of non-use! Thanks for the tips!

Beth - I keep my lights pretty dim most of the time, I don't use them in every lamp I have!! For reading I like the regular bulbs. I am still not a die-hard CFL'er. I will keep an eye out for you!!
Bill - I think like more things that we try to conserve with, it's always in steps. I am just switching a few to CLF's at a time.  Now...as for toilet paper and one-ply...ahhh that's a little tougher for me! I gave it a shot today as you suggested and it's just not for me. I have ALWAYS bought two-ply and have instilled that in my kids when and if they ever bought paper for the house (rare if ever)...or while helping with the weekly shopping.

I am two-ply kind of gal here! Good idea though. It did cross my mind to post a note in the bathroom to encourage that idea...only because I have thought that very thought this past month. "Where is all the paper going?"

I agree Jennifer, it's not great for reading, however for the refrigerator it's not too bad of a place to start.  As for the mercury, I know that came up as an issue and I believe they are working on low limits for the mercury content and even tested that quite regularly. I know there are certain tips on recycling simply for the mercury content. Which is always better. Thanks for sharing!! It's not for everyone I know. I am just a beginner in the recycle mindset!!
Renee - Thanks. I like the idea too. Keep in mind to make this a bigger success, recycling should be included for those bulbs that die out. Thanks for stopping by.
Hey Jason, Thanks for the comment. I know this is nothing new, times even tough to pay the prices, but in the long run I believe they save a lot more!! Recycle, Recycle!! Thanks for coming by!
Carole -  Let us know what you think of the lighting you get and if it's positive for you. Good luck on the refrigerator purchase. Thanks for the tip on the lower freezer section. I wonder how that makes it more efficient. I just bought a new fridge about 1.5 yrs ago. I love it!  Thanks for stopping by. Greetings from AZ.

CANDACE:  Since you started your CandiLand feature, I keep thinking of you as Candi.  As I started typing this, the song Candy Girl popped into my head.  Sorry for the tangent.  Anyway, thanks for sharing this information.  I am using these all over the house.  I even put them into my hi-hats, although the one drawback is that they can't be dimmed.  They save a fortune on bills though.  BTW, I featured your HTML lesson in Active Rain Addicts presents this week.  Speak to you soon.

Oh wow...you are up late!  Call me Candi...I am good with that! I had no idea you featured it. I have been so behind with reading and postings. I can't keep up with reading yours and Jason's post...I swear you must type in your sleep! Keeping up reading on your two is  a full time job! I will check out the Addicts group. I might have missed it! Hope all is well. Hey-- do you get a purple tint to your lighting?

I am thinking too, they sell dimming bulbs or three-way CFL's for dimming on those bulbs.

Candace/Candi - Adam and I have been quite prolific over the past few weeks, and I appreciate the fact that you (and others) are so faithful to read and to comment on our posts.  By the way, I just posted seven more long blogs, so get started reading them!  I am completely kidding.  Talk to you soon -

Adam - You will probably kill me for this after the Caillou incident, but here you go:

CANDI:  I know that keeping up with Crouch and me can be a tough job.  I just wanted to let you know that it was up there.  You can get to it whenver you have time.  There is a tint to the lighting now that you mention it.  I've heard that they had the dimming bulbs like this, but I haven't really looked for them.  I'll speak to you soon.

Jason-- You crack me up!! This is the song that Karly has on her cell phone when I call!!  It was cute and she was quite proud to share that with me when she recieved a new cell phone!  Am here jamming!! My little 'bella' (my little pup) thinks it time to go out, I am moving too much in my chair!! LOL

Adam - Tough is an understatement there buddy! I am just thinking and my brain gets saturated and still can't keep up!! I do want you to notice however at my Gilbert position, I'm closing in on top two for Gilbert. I feel a conquer coming on!!

You go girl!  I can't help you with Jason, but all of my blogs for the week are listed inside of Sunday Bloggy Sunday with a brief description of each.  Basically, you can avoid me all week and get caught up on Sundays if you'd like.  I'm sure that you'll eventually be number 1 for Gilbert.  You already are for me!

Adam- I could never ignore you all week, that's not possible. I will be back on track in no time! I will need to take you up on this weeks SBS...do you ever sleep? You got it bad!! Thanks for being a huge support my friend!! I do appreciate your time and readership!!

Candi - Glad you liked the tune.  You will be #1 in Gilbert very soon I bet.  Keep up the good work!  I am #2 in Austin, but I have a long way to go to attain the top spot (I am just over 49,000, but I need almost 96,000, so I am a little over halfway).  The top guy here has been inactive since June.

Candace thanks for an interesting blog. I have already changed most of the bulbs in my house because my electric bill was unreall. any time anything burns out or breaks I replace it with an energy effecient replace ment . You always save money in the long run.

Hugh-  I agree. I think more and more homeowners are realizing this can save a ton of energy = money!! Thanks for commenting and stoppying by!
