HOA Politics and Fun Investment Properties:

You know that an HOA board has done a terrible job when I get put on the list as a candidate for the 2007 board. This has been a lengthy process though. The fun all began back in early 2007 when the old guard HOA tried to get re-elected for a 5th term and the homeowners were not going to have any part of this.

Our annual meeting turned into a freek show and before you knew it, we almost had a riot on our hands. The residents were upset because the current board did not inform the homeowners on many issues. Finally they tried to attempt a coup de tat to remain in power, and us homeowners had to convince the board to hold a new meeting for a new board.

So now 6 weeks later, we had another problem with the board not allowing us to vote in a new board. We finally had to hire an attorney and with their help, we will be having a fair election on November 5, 2007.

Whats really funny is the board members finally decided not to re-run, so by default I will be sitting on an HOA for my rental property for a community I do not even live in. The homeowners told me they would rather have me, then the current board go figure.

I just hope this does not end up being the biggest regret in my life.

How's it going now?

It's been awhile since you posted this, but still... good luck! Check your HOA's D&O insurance.

Matt- I made a decision NOT to run this year.  I am done.  I never saw a bunch of more irritating adults fight about landscaping in my life.

Well, good on you for giving it a shot. Sorry it was a bad experience. I might email you about it. We write about this stuff, and maybe others could learn from your experience with a board gone bad!
