Halloween Trick or Treat with Candi - 2007 ....Let's Be Safe!

  WelcomeI have to say that I am a little partial to Halloween! I have loved Halloween from the time I can remember walking! When it came time to introduce my kids, they tolerated many Halloween nights with over the top costumes! I have to admit, I never used a costume out of the box, I always found something in the house or in the yard to create a costume for my kids or myself.  Being a creative family the tradition carries on through the kids now!  I  also have an odd connection with Halloween just simply because of my name, most friends have called me "Candi" over the years!

So when it comes to Candy Apples, Candied Yams, Candy Corn  and Candy Treats, it only seems appropriate for me to take a minute and share my favorite Candy Favorites in honor of the most popular Candy Month of the Year!!  Here's wishing you a happy and safe Halloween!

Candied Carmel Apples:

 

  This recipe for delicious caramel candy apples is quick and easy to make. (prep time 20 mins)

  • 5 ripe, red apples
  • 1 pound soft, store-bought caramels
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup chopped peanuts
  • 5 wooden skewers

PREPARATION:

1. Begin by washing the apples and removing their stems. Stick the wooden skewers securely into the stem end of the apples.

2. Boil some water in the bottom of the double boiler.

Unwrap the caramels, and place them in the top of the double boiler with the two tablespoons of water.

halloween house3. Place the pan with the candies over the boiling water. Let them heat up, and stir them gently until they are completely heated and smooth.

4. Remove the caramels from the heat. Dip the apples one at a time into the melted caramel and coat them.

5. Dip the tops into the chopped peanuts, and place each apple in a cupcake paper. Chill the apples in the fridge until the caramel is set.

Be creative with adding nuts, white chocolate, red hots!

Candied Apple Yam Bake:

  • 6-8 Yams
  • 6-8 apples, cut into 1/4's

Boil yams and slice (peel of course). Slice apples and put alternately with yams in casserole and cover with sauce. Bake in oven at 350 degrees from 35-45 minutes until apples are tender.

SAUCE:

  • 2 C boiling water
  • 1 C sugar
  • 1/4 lb. butter
  • 4 tsp. cornstarch
  • 1 tsp. salt

Cook until thick and add:

  • 1 jar fruit dessert (baby food)
  • 1/2 can frozen lemonade

This recipe serves about 20, so you may want to use half only.

Pumpkin Bars:

  • 2 C. Sugar  
  •  4 eggs
  • 1 C. Oil  
  • 2 C. Pumpkin or (1- 15oz can)

Mix all above ingredients well then add:

  • 2 tsp. Baking Soda

  • 2 tsp. Cinnamon 

  • ½ tsp. Salt

Mix well and pour into greased cookie sheet.  Bake at 350º for 20 min. or until done.  Let cool.

Frosting: 

  • 4 oz Cream Cheese

  • ½ Stick of Butter

  • 2-3 T. Milk   

  • 1 (16oz) Powdered Sugar

  • 1 tsp. Vanilla

Trick or Treat Tips & Safety:
  • Trick or TreatWalk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
  • Cross the street only at corners.
  • Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars.
  • Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
  • Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
  • Carry a flashlight to light your way.
  • Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)
  • Visit homes that have the porch light on.
  • Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
  • Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
  • Be cautious of animals and strangers.
  • pumpkinHave a grown-up inspect your treats before eating. And don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

Candace,  Lovely Halloween pics and recipes !  I'm going to try the candied apple yam one ...sounds tasty.

Yum Jo - this is a recipe that was shared with me, I have not tried this version, but something similar with marshmallows. Let me know how it turns out! I think I am going to test it too this weekend.  Yams and apples are healthy right? LOL
