The local Phoenix newspaper, the Arizona Republic is reporting that all the pet shelters across the Phoenix Valley are crowded to overflow and pets are being turned away because of the rise in pets being dropped off at shelters by people losing their homes to foreclosure. The shelters have coined the term "foreclosure pets". There is a huge need for people who want to adopt animals to come and adopt these animals. It is also reported that many animals are simply being left in homes that are abandoned by the owners when foreclosure happens, or being left by the side of the road. Shelters are reporting people coming into the shelters in tears at the thought that they must abandon their beloved pets, but with the foreclosures many homeowners have to move to smaller rented apartments that will not accept animals, or they simply cannot any longer afford to feed the animals because of their financial circumstances.
If you are in the Phoenix area and have been considering getting a pet, now may be the time to go to the local shelters and check out some of these beautiful animals.
The Humane Society of the United States reports that this problem is happening all across America as well, but is is particularly difficult in areas such as Phoenix where foreclosures are higher.

That is too sad. I can't imagine having to give Rocco away. He would not know what to do!
This situtation is awful!!
Bob & Carolin, we came across a home where the tenants had been evicted, and found an abandoned cat without food or water. What kind of people can leave an animal alone to die? It's bad enough to have to leave beloved pets with the humane shelter, but to abandon them locked up in an empty house? I can't understand such heartlessness.
That is terrible! I love Mr. Fee fee and would be one of those homeless people that carry their pets everywhere if I ever lost my home! We have one guy here that sits by the Chick Fil A with a baby stroller and his toy yorkie sits there all day while he begs for money!
Geez, I agree with heartless. Gotta wonder about the kids that are stuck with these folks...
I hate that. I am involved in the local greyhound rescue here and it breaks my heart to see some of the animals come back and even then for not very good reasons.
Bob & Carolin, I'm afraid this one is playing itself out around the country. It's really sad, both for the humans and the pets.
My pets are my children... I can't imagine leaving them, the sadness of foreclosure never seems to end.
Bob & Carolin,
A friend of ours has been trapping stray dogs, taking them to a clinic for neutering, and placing the animals with families. His name is Mickey, and IMHO, he's a saint!

That is too sad and most of these pets are considered part of the family and giving the family pet hurts worse than losing their homes!
Bob, we are seeing some similar situations here as well. While we don't have near the amount of foreclosures most of the US has, people are still feeling strapped and gas prices aren't helping. When people look for ways to cut costs, unfortunately more victims are sometimes created.
Google "foreclosure pets" and you will find my content ranks #1 and #2. I felt like something had to be done, so I wrote a blog and an article about it. It's getting the news out because I get calls from reporters all the time about this. My own SPCA in Sacramento has set up special provisions to care for these pets after I contacted them. See, we all can make a difference!
Bob and Carolin - This is a real problem, and agent in my area who specializes in REO properties wrote about this matter.
Bob and Carolin - Bringing this to the forefront will save the lives of many pets. Great job making the awareness.
Thanks for the post. I had a tenant last year who was moving to an apartment where pets were not allowed and I called a few people who love cats to see if they would take the cat.
Bob and Carolin,
Not a surprise that these poor creatures are left behind.....however a simple call could have made it easier on them.
Thank you for your support of my posts too.
It just breaks my heart when I hear of these things happending.
It is sad, I have not had this happen yet with any REO property I have listed and I guess by the time it gets to REO the pets have been removed.
What a sad commentary and result of the foreclosure crisis that we are experiencing. Our dog is part of our family, and I can't imagine leaving her behind.
Bob and Carolin, I have been seeing the stories about this.. I am such a dog lover and this breaks my heart.. I know it's tough for the homeowners losing their home etc, probably moving to an apartment that does not allow pets but there are plenty of shelters that will take them.. Thanks the for post. God bless,
I suspect this is true in many areas, and you're right - it's a good time to adopt a pet!
Oh this is so sad. I had no Idea this was happening. It makes sense... if they are losing their homes and have to move into rentals. Many rentals will not allow pets.
Hi Bob & Carolyn - Another unfortunate part of the foreclosure process. It is nice that you are making people aware of this.
I love my pets, as well as my feral cat family that I have had tamed and neutered. I hate to hear this stuff, and I do wish I were in a better position to help.
Bob and Carolin,
At least people are aware of that and hopefully that will lead to more rescues. That is sad and another tragic result of the mortgage mess pe se. Stephanie and I have 2 cats and they are a dear part of our family. We will hope that all the pets out there have a chance...
It's so nice to read that there are some in the business putting a 'real' FACE on foreclosures--maybe it'll take a kitty or doggy face for people to wake up and realize that these are HUMAN problems!
Great post, Bob & Carolin!
I embarrased to say I love my jack russel terrier more than my son (just kidding) but almost :)
What an eye-opener. How tragic for the families and now obviously for the pets.
Bob and Carolin: That is so sad!! I just visited our local shelter here and they are pretty much full also and always are.
Hi Bob and Carolin,
This is such an important post. Thank you for the reminder, I hear this is happening all over the place. Thx for the visit to my post.
