Arizona's sixth-largest city, with more than 176,000 residents, Tempe successfully blends the dynamic environment of a high-tech business center, the fun and excitement of a resort community, the warmth of a comfortable neighborhood, and the quaint appeal of a small-town college community.

Located in central Maricopa County, Tempe adjoins Scottsdale to the north, Mesa to the east, Chandler to the south, and Phoenix to the west. More than 750 high-tech and manufacturing firms are located in Tempe, employing more than 32,000 people.

Tempe is home to Arizona State University, one of the three largest universities in the country, with an enrollment of 67,000 students. Its 20 colleges and schools offer more than 250 academic undergraduate programs, more than 25 masters programs, more than 100 doctoral programs and one law degree program.

ASU continues to contribute to Tempe's considerable educational and cultural resources. Downtown Tempe's Mill Avenue has become an entertainment favorite, boasting live music, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, theater, and film. The annual spring and fall Festival of the Arts draws tens of thousands to Downtown Tempe, the largest such event in the Southwest. ASU's Gammage Auditorium, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, seats 3,000 and hosts world-class productions.

Covering nearly 70 square miles, Tempe is located 7 miles southwest of downtown Phoenix. Neighborhoods in Tempe feature every style of home, from turn-of-the-century adobe houses to luxury properties with acreage and horse privileges. Many housing developments are centered around Tempe's extensive network of parks. The median income in Tempe is $47,700. As of April 2009, the median home price in Tempe is $249,900.
