Just a few yards from the back of the Phoenix Zoo, is a wonderful little park called Evelyn Hallman Park - formerly known as Tempe Canal Park. Most of the park is designed with marked trails, but for those of you who love to fish, purchase your Urban Fishing license and plan on spending a day. Coined as one of the "best Urban fishing habitats" this is a definite place of enjoyment for avid fishermen.
Located near McDowell and College Ave, in Tempe, AZ - if you can muster through a bit of construction, this is a great place to get some exercise and enjoy these beautiful Arizona mornings. Just in case you need some proof - check out these great shots taken just last week:

P.S. If you watch very carefully, you'll even be able to spot a big horn sheep on top of the mountain.

This is a really cool part of town that kind of get's over-looked by people. I like the small hike up to "hole in the rock" over by the zoo.. There have been talks about turning this whole area into a large "Central Park" type of destination. Great central location..
Hey Nick from Tempe - thanks for sharing your insight. You're right that it's definitely overlooked - my kids were amazed that this park was located in a residential/commercial/urban building type of area ... Wouldn't it be nice to have such a destination as this in Tempe?
Wonderful photos Calie! Next time I am in PHX in the winter, I will have to pay it and the zoo both a visit.
Thanks, Joanne. My newest hobby is photography and am thoroughly enjoying it. Do you visit our great state often? Realtor Nick (comment above yours) is a Tempe expert - I bet he could help out with some other great things to do, as well. Do you golf?
Hi Calie, my Dad, sister, and brother all live in or near Sedona, so I am there frequently. I try not to go to PHX more often than I need to, at least in the summer. I am a mountain girl and the heat is hard on me. I was there in July for the Howard Brinton covention and seldome left the hotel. Then I went up to Sedona for a few days. At least it is a little cooler there.
I don't play golf, but I love to hike and ski. I have some friends that buy season passes almost every year for Snowbowl, but it is open so seldom that I don't think they go there much. I skied there once, and once at Sunrise as a very new skier.
Calie,
I grew up hiking at "hole in the rock", but never knew about this park. From the photos, it looks like it has some of the same feel as the zoo. Will definitely be checkin' it out. Great photos!
Oh, it looks so peaceful. Thanks for those beautiful photos.
