Motorhomes (with their slide-out rooms and awnings) are wider than this Tucson, AZ spec house!
Back in January 2008, I wrote a post about this unique home when it was first under construction. Here's the link: Long Skinny House. 170' long. 9' wide.
What you see here on the left of the photo is the carport. Half the car will be under roof in the shade (from noon on) the the other half will be at the mercy of the elements.
The builder is working under Tucson'sl aid back "mañana" type of scheduling. The first listing agent has been canned after about six months, and the new agent was kind enough to give me access.
The floor to ceiling height of the home exceeds its width by three feet, as you can see from the interior photo.
During my "starving artist" grad school days, I lived in an 8' wide trailer. This $270,000 spec house is only 12 inches wider than that mobile home!
Finishes (those that are installed) are high end, and the feel of the home is actually pretty nice because of the vertical height.
The sidewalk leading to my front door is wider than the hallway, though. You couldn't share the hall with anyone larger than a first grader without being uncomfortably close.
Bathroom fixtures for the two MBR suites (right!) at each end of the house have yet to be installed
One thing struck me as odd as I walked the length of the house. Several of the double pane windows are cracked and broken from the inside.
I wondered about this for a few minutes until I imagined myself as a carpenter trying to turn around while holding a 2x4. LOL
I'm looking forward to seeing how the home finishes out, and also how they intend to landscape it. As it progresses, I'll update you.

That is the weirdest idea I have seen in a while. I wish him the best. I know that is not the way I would imagine spreading out 1500+ ft of space....lol
Wow - that is a long skinny house. The finishes do look nice though!
Mike, talk about a home that is "buyer specific"! Like maybe a buyer who is a little odd - like the house?
You would want to be thin and tall...otherwise you might get squeezed...and not by the mortgage payments.
Umm... ok. I'm not sure I would want to be listing agent on this one. I would imagine it to be a tough sell! I do like the curves and lighting. Not much else though.
Is the location THAT good? I'm assuming the building dimensions were determined by the legal set-backs on the lot? Why else would someone struggle to build on what would otherwise seem to be an unbuildable lot?
Vickie,
The location is nothing special, and you're right about the setback requirements. The lot was created as a split, and at the time, it met all the requirements for subdividing a lot.

Looks like a house for a long skinny woman, and a tall skinny man. Do you have to walk through one bedroom or bathroom to get to the next one?
And they only gave the first agent 6months? Talk about unrealistic!
Take this concept a little further and transform a house into the neighborhood sundial!
I'm guessing the second agent will be canned in a few more months the third might get the price in line for someone that would appreciate it.
Well, this is interesting. I suppose there is an interesting person or two who would love to live in a unique home like this. Leave it to Tuc-son... LOL
What kind of lens did you use? That wall next to the frig space looks a little tweaked??? Or is it my eyeballs? I'd like to see the bedrooms and the bathrooms.
It looks a little tweaked to me too.. Mike, that comment about the 2x4 had me rolling on the floor. Too funny.
That's like a railroad car apartment ...popular in the northeast. (New York,Phila) To each his own! Thanks for the pics - would love to see updated shots after it's completed.
Thanks for the update Mike, sure looks like the perfect home for a linear thinking person!
Thanks for the update, Mike! I can't believe how much like a warehouse this home looks. Here in Charlotte, it would be difficult to find enough land to build something with a footprint this long!
Debe,
Let's see what it looks like when it's finished. I'm thinking they'll have to stage it too.
Bonnie,
I appreciate a person who thinks straight!
Sharon,
I'll be doing a followup. Stay tuned.
Jesse and Doreen,
The "tweaked" look is parallax from the camera lens. Remember that this is narrow, tall, and long. A better camera wouldn't distort the vertical component of the photo.
The bedrooms and bathrooms aren't close to finished out, and had no visual interest at the moment, but stay tuned for the next update!
Terry,
That could happen. Stay tuned.
Kent,
The sundial thing could have worked if they'd elevated the house by one story; they could have put parking beneath.
Joan,
I think the blame goes to the owner/builder. It's still not close to finished.
Kevin,
The bedrooms are at the opposite ends of the house, and each has its own bath and closet. (There's precious little storage space in this house!)

Mike - this one is really strange looking - I don't think I could live in a 9' wide home!
